Celebrating with T2....

Hi everyone!

It's been almost three weeks and things have gone really well. I've become a finger-pricking champion and the changes to my diet have meant my blood sugars have been under 8 most of the time I've tested for the last week! (hooray!)

The missus and I will be celebrating some work-related good news in a week or so and I'm really hoping to celebrate with a slice of cake. How bad of an idea is this? I tend to be an all or nothing kind of gal and I'm sufficiently scared of being ill that I don't want to harm my progress. But - I feel like a bit of cake probably won't kill me?

Any advice anyone has for how to navigate celebrations would be wonderful. For reference I'm veggie so it's not like I can substitute with a nice steak!

Thank you!

Hi @Olive_B
I'm only a couple of months ahead of you but have had a few celebrations to negotiate. A slice of cake (on 3 occasions) didn't kill me, but it did raise my levels above 12. Maybe because I didn't stop at 1 piece and had 2.
I did read somewhere that smothering cake in double cream slows its effect down!
Luckily, I did find that wine doesn't seem to raise me at all, and that it doesn't take much of it to make me feel quite tipsy

Depends wholly on what your blood sugars are doing. If you're nice and low, having them shoot up fast with cake can make you feel rather ill for a bit, which might not be a fun way to celebrate. A quick walk around the neighbourhood to get blood sugars back down is a bit like celebration interruptus, so maybe not the best idea. What I usually do is have a bite, maybe two, of whatever my husband's having (the perks of marriage to someone who doesn't have our issues!), so I still get the flavour, but not the spike to go with it. Entirely up to you though. Risk some ill feeling immediately after, and carb cravings for a few days? Your choice. Could well be you won't get either of those though. No idea. I would, but you might not notice a thing! Alcohol's alright, depending on what it is, (vodka, rum, scotch etc should be fine), and you could just make a keto cake yourself... https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-no-bake-chocolate-cake for instance. No idea if it's any good because I am not much of a kitchen princess, but who knows. Might be worth a shot. Birthdays and the like I usually sort with just going for nuts and cheese or whatever gets put on the table that's low carb. Or fast right through them, but that's usually considered "not social". (Aaaargh!).

In any case, go with your gut, and whatever you do, just enjoy yourself eh. It's a one-off, and a lot of us relax a little around one-offs. Christmas only comes by once a year, for instance. And work-related celebrations aren't a daily occurrence either.
Jo :)

I agree with previous posters you need to find out what works for you. I personally wouldn't as I am not sure I would stop t one piece. I do use artificial sweeteners and have found a great peanut butter fudge that is keto and tastes great- I'm planning to have my son make that for my birthday in a few weeks. I then freeze most of it and eat it over a few weeks- 32 pieces all 1.5 carbs or thereabouts. I can have a couple well within my carb limit.

Keep testing as that will help you get back onto the wagon.

Oh and congratulations on your good news!

My celebration cravings are all savoury (not a cake person). I approached this by trying small portions and testing. So one roast potato, one yorkshire pudding etc. I have found I can eat these, if I control portion size, and hit the bg levels I want (higher than long term goals but not so high I'm unhappy). I guess similar to JoKalsbeek a couple of bites but no more. More finger pricking I'm afraid but it does tell you what you need to know.
If you aren't a 'itty bit will do' person (and I am, always have been) then maybe investigate the low carb cake recipes, they seem quite successful as substitute flours (almond, coconut) fit quite well. lowcarbmaven is worth checking out.
Happy celebrations :)

Plenty of keto style cakes if someone is up for making them and you fancy that. Or go for nice nuts and cheeses maybe or any dish that you love and consider a treat.

I had a slice of cake on the weekend and my BG was 6.5, i normally in the range 4-5 so a small spike, was well worth it. You have to find out what works for you. Everyone's diabetes is different. Something I've noticed over the last few months after diagnosis.

My uncle also has it but his range is 8 - 12 and different things work for him that don't work for me. Having a slice won't do any harm as long as you don't go over 8/9. But having it once it in a while is a treat, just walk it off or go for a run to bring your levels in range.

As for me I was still within the 4-7 range so didn't have to exercise it off and my next BG reading after the 6.5 was back in my normal range 4-5.

Great that you had your treat with minimal rise. And you’re right everyone has to manage their diabetes. Can’t say I’d want my range where your uncles is though and I’m not so sure it is working as well as it could for him. A constant 8-12 is much more likely long term to lead to complications than a standard 4-8 range.
