This should only take a moment of your time – please keep reading.
Many thanks to those who answered my previous thread, but we need lots more responses, so let’s try a different tack.

Diabetes UK are trying to find out what is happening on the ground with diabetes services across the UK. Information will help them map issues and identify those areas where more needs to be done to ensure people with diabetes are provided with the essential care they need and expect. I know that some of you are unhappy with aspects of Diabetes UK's policies, but they are the most powerful pressure group that we have (and certainly are the group that the government pays most attention to), so this could be a valuable way of bringing deficiencies in care provision to the attention of national bodies.

All patients should receive NINE crucial tests from their GP at an annual review of their diabetes management. These are:
1. Get your blood glucose levels measured at least once a year. (HbA1c blood test)
2. Have your blood pressure measured and recorded at least once a year, and set a personal target that is right for you
3. Have your cholesterol measured every year..
4. Have your eyes screened for signs of retinopathy every year.
5. Have your legs and feet checked. The skin, circulation and nerve supply of your legs and feet should be examined every year..
6. Have your kidneys checked every year: urine test for protein (a sign of possible kidney problems) and a blood test to measure kidney function.
7. Have your weight checked and have your waist measured to see if you need to lose weight. If so, put it in your personal care/health plan with ways to achieve it that you have agreed with your doctor and dietician.
8. Get support if you are a smoker, including advice and support on how to quit, and put it in your personal care/health plan with ways to achieve it..
9. Develop your personal health and care plan with your doctor, to meet your own needs

PLEASE answer on this thread which of these tests you receive annually according to the following format:
Yes: (list test numbers)
No: (list test numbers)
N/A (not applicable):
My postcode: (give first half of your postcode)

[so one reply might be: Yes: numbers 2, 3, 4, and 6
No: numbers 1, 5, 7, and 9
N/A: 8
My postcode: L6]

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to do this. Please send in your response on this thread before 28 June, and I will forward the results to Diabetes UK.

I'm under consultant not gp but its yes for all of them except I haven't seen a dietician since 1998 - not that I'd want to tbh

I'm under a consultant, I don't smoke so 8 is irrelevant.
Yes to all others (though I have a small waist and don't have it measured, I am weighed though).

Re: Chance for YOU to help end the diabetes care postcode lo

As far as my practice is concerned, the answer would be "Yes" to all 9.

As far as my personal care goes - "No" to number 8, as I haven't smoked for 13 years. My personal plan has been developed between me and the practise nurse (wonderful woman!) and the GP I go to supports me - I'm in control. I don't see the diabetic specialist GP  . I get full blood tests annually, and extras (HbA1c and cholesterol) whenever I want them - at present, every 4 months.

I weigh myself and also measure my own waist (waist? what waist? ). No one else comes near me with a tape measure!

I'm positive, however, that all nine categories are offered by my practice to all newly diagnosed diabetics, and are continued with those who are willing to come in for reviews. Not everybody will - there are a lot of ostriches out there.

We also all get issued with test kits, and strips etc are on prescription.

All this wonderful care may cease completely if the Minister removes the Minimum Practice Income Guarantee from large area rural practices with a small population, like mine. We'll certainly lose one surgery (close to me), meaning it will be a 4-hour round trip, by bus, to get to see a doctor. In fact, the practice may well close. Sorry! rant over.

Many thanks to those who have responded so far. This is just a renewed appeal to members of the forum to please respond. It needn't take a minute, just using the format:

Re: Chance for YOU to help end the diabetes care postcode lo

Many thanks for the statistics, nomistheman. 10% return sounds a bit better. I suspect another reason for limited response is that people think it's not relevant if they are getting all the checks, but this is also very useful information in narrowing down where the real problems are happening. I know that many people are firmly opposed to DUK's views on diet, but this is one issue where I think DUK can be really helpful, IF ENOUGH PEOPLE RESPOND :x
