Hi Folks,

I decided to say to my self screw it and eat about 3/4 of an Easter egg I was given.
(72 carbs (100% sugar))

Heres my bloods

5.8 Basal
7.1 (30 Minutes after eating0
5.8 (90 Minutes)

I took a Metformin 500mg around 10 minutes before I started eating.

My question is why is there no massive spike? I've read that around 30 minutes after eating it peaks.

I've ate 3-4 tortillas in the past and have had a spike of 8.1 nearly 1 hour out. and around 7.2 at 90 minutes Which is around
(40 carbs or 3g of sugar total))

Anyone any idea why there isnt a massive spike as ive essentially had 72grams of sugar?

Cheers,

Dean

Whereas it seems true that different foods seem to be tolerated differently by different people I have, so far, not heard of anyone who can eat regular chocolate and get away with it. High cocoa content chocolate is tolerated more where the addicts are concerned.

If you repeat this test and still read low then you have my congratulations.

EDIT: Next time take half hourly readings over a period of three hours in order to find if the peak hasn't just moved sideways.

Even so the post parandial is we within range which is puzzling me as even at 90 minutes it should still be high. Yesterday I did a similar test with Starbucks orange and a 54 gram panini and got roughly the same 7.8 at 30 then down to 6.3 90 mins out. Food is weird

@sheepie123 - As chocolate has quite a high fat content, it ca sometimes take longer for the sugar to impact the blood numbers.

Alternatively, some people find they can tolerate certain foods better or worse than others. An example of that could be someone who can tolerate moderate amounts of sugar, but grains (bread. pasta, couscous; that sort of thing) make their blood sky rocket.

Irritatingly enough, for some folks, not all carbs are equal.

Taking your metformin before eating anything will not have the effect of reducing your reaction - met doesn't work like that - it's a build up drug over a period of time to reduce insulin resistance - the only reason it's recommended to take with food is to lessen the side effects on your tummy.

I agree with @Squire Fulwood to the advice he gives in his edit, I have quite a good reaction over foods in the two hour window - my highs come later and can hang around for days - for example - Good Friday my yearly treat of battered fish and 6 chips most of the batter removed - except the last 3rd on the tail (that's my once a year treat lol)
This was lunch time so no gliclizide taken
Base 5.1,
1 hr 7.2
2hr 5.9 :)
3hr 7.9 (too high for me usually)
4 hr 7.7:(
5 hr (before next meal) 7.6 usually in the high 4s before meal
Stayed in the high 6s low 7s most of next day

Careful of "cheating" too often it will come back and bite you on the bum in the future

Carbs from different sources give me different readings - potato is interesting - was interesting, I should say - as it pushed my BG really high and it stayed high for about 20 hours.
After keeping my BG steady for a while I could eat something fairly high carb and only get a slight spike, on the first day. If I did the same thing the day after - woosh - very high, but usually a fairly quick fall, compared with previous spikes, but still hours longer than normality. Readings were then pushed a bit higher for all foods for at least half a week.
These were very brief intervals of experimentation, as I was trying to get control for my second testing, hoping for lower Hba1c.
I found it encouraging in that the longer I stayed with lower BG levels the less damage to them by a single high carb item.
I have increased my daily allowance of carbs as I could remain under 7.5 after meals, and that continued to fall week by week.
Although interesting, I see only the results, with no greater clarity about possible consequences from eating extra carbs.

Only thing that gets me for 3+ hours is dominos even so I'm still below 7.5 tops

I know there not good but if I starve myself mostly during the week I will treat myself. This disease won't control me. Though I think at times the doc should give me an insulin pen so I can binge from time to time

With levels like those the last thing you need is insulin! You have plenty of your own. Too much - hypo land.

I'm not too sure that works. You starve yourself during the week and you're in control.
A little balance could be a better way.
Wish you well

On Saturday you posted that you were considering gastric surgery or a pancreas transplant. Are you getting any help from your doctor or nurse with managing your diabetes? Have you considered taking the low carb course that is run on this site?

Can you tell us how you were diagnosed and what the figures were.
I was diagnosed as Borderline 48 in May last year. And I did not take it seriously so I had a subsequent test in September with no noticable rise then one in January which went to 55.

My Lipids / Liver and Kidney Functions are ok. My colestorol is a little high but LDL is 1.1.

The Diabetic nurse was puzzled as to why I was presented to her until she seen the HBA1C I assume others come with mid complications or more different results the HBA1C according to her was the only thing that said I was diabetic and no other results reflected T2 whatsoever.

I just took my Partners blood hers went 5.2 to 5.6 after 2 hours eating a cream egg.
Mine would go 5.6 to 6.5 after the same egg (I guess)

Its odd I results sit in the range of Pre-Diabetes. On top of that I am going through fertility treatment (Male Factor) which brings an immense amount of stress on its own so it could be that I am getting false positives.

Foods a funny thing and how it reacts is a mistery at times. I have tested my self on chocolate and BS seems pretty tolerant to it. I have been working on my house this last few weeks so been snacking for lunch as I just wanted to get work done and not stop to eat for example one lunch consisted of a bag of crisps, Greek Yoghurt with Blueberries, finished off with a Lidl version of a snickers and a coffee I know not at all good bar the yoghurt, BS 2hrs after were 5.0.

Today I had a day off went for a 5 mile walk with my G/F, went the cinema to see Fast and Furious 8 then went for an Indian had popadoms and chutney, Chicken Chat, then a mixed Tandoori and half a Pashwari Naan and large a coke, I was 5.5 before I ate and 2hrs after 4.6.

Yet I could have something like a tin of beans on toast and I would be through the roof. Like I said foods a funny thing and we all have different tolerances what's good for one will be a big no no for another.

I agree a fried breakfast on sat left me high 6 but a diluted orange does nothing I've only just been diagnosed so in still learning

The reason I asked is because the figures you quote after eating chocolate etc. seem to suggest that your insulin first response is working so I can't easily see how you got an Hba1c that defined you as diabetic. Still, it happened and that's that. I can understand why your DN was puzzled.

Behold, a miracle.
