Anyone got any advice what sort is best .

85% cocao is OK .... but only a square or two. Consider yourself blessed if you've never been a lover of it.

Steer clear of diabetic choc unless you want to spend the festive season in the smallest room in the house! Good quality high content dark chocolate 70% or higher is the best thing. A couple of squares can be satisfying. I have never tried it but lots on here swear by Aldi Roth dark choc (think that's the right name) I believe you can get a pack of 5 small bars and 1 bar is only a few carbs.

I like Lindt 85% 2 squares doesn't push my sugars up. To make it go further you can melt 2 or 3 squares gently then coat some Brazil nuts and let them set.

Hi @Sharon Anne! I haven't tried the Thorntons diabetic chocolate myself, but I have read on here that they use Stevia as a sweetener which has a laxative effect, so you wouldn't want to eat too much. I don't know what it tastes like, but I'm sure others will be able to tell you.
The advice on here seems to be to eat chocolate with as high a cocoa content as possible. Which is dark chocolate with a a cocoa content of at least 70%. There are dark chocolates available with cocoa contents of up to 90%, but I found those a bit bitter, and prefer the ones with a 70-73% cocoa content. You need to try them to find which you like, and if you use a meter to test to see which affects your bg level.
Also the advice on here is not to eat more than a couple of squares.

Sainsbury currently have Green & Black's 85% Organic Dark Chocolate on offer @ 2 for £3.00. Sugar is low on ingredients listing and tastes really nice with no bitter after tones usually associated with high cocoa content chocolate , I think this may be due to the Madagascan vanilla that they add to their product. I think this may well worth a try if you test afterwards with no adverse results. A cheaper alternative , but not as tasty in my opinion , is Aldi's Moser Roth Dark 85% Cocoa Chocolate @ £1.19 for 125 grams (5 x 25 gram bars).

Hi. I would certainly stay with the 85% Dark and I've tried most of them and Green & Blacks to me is the best and has the lowest added sugar. Yes, it goes on special at all the supermarkets every few weeks so stock up when it does.

Second @lovinglife suggestion for Aldi's Moser Roth, each bar has 4g of carbs and is a good quality chocolate at a reasonable price.

I beg to differ here: Stevia shouldn't cause the runs - It's sugar alcohols/polyols that do the dirty on us this way, and Stevia is definitely NOT one of these - and it's quite safe for diabetic use.

However Thorntons sugar free and diabetic chocolate offerings do contain polyols and these will cause the runs, and Thorntons actually have this warning on their website:
WARNING: Excessive consumption may cause laxative effects. We recommend eating no more than 20g of polyols per day, though children or particularly sensitive people may react to levels lower than this.

So definitely stick with "normal!" high percentage cocoa (70%+) dark chocolate, enjoy, and avoid all the nasty side effects...

I second @noblehead 's support of Aldi's Moser Roth brand.
I always like the dark bars by lindt and the lidl's own brand is good too.

If you are only now developing a taste for choc then try and develop it for dark choc, 70% cocoa solids, or more. I think it is like alcohol - an acquired taste, but well worth the effort!

Lidl own brand is very good I agree, the best one is the 70% cocoa chocolate with caramel, it has 5.1g of carbs per square but the squares are rather large, it reminds me of a thin chocolate bar you use to get in the 70's but I just can't recall the name.

The jar of truvia (stevia) I have has a warning on the side which says 'EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION MAY INDUCE LAXATIVE EFFECTS'.

Edit: The laxative effects would be due to the added Erythritol in truvia, rather than the stevia itself.
