Just been to see the doctor about my raised cholesterol levels. Strange thing is that, although he agreed that cholesterol might not actually be as dangerous as we once thought, in his opinion my cholesterol levels are 'dangerously high'. He's referred to me a specialist dietician, which I'm rather looking forward to and also "to a friend of mine who is a diabetes specialist and will find your case very interesting...." Quite looking forward to that conversation too.

Bottom line is, I've decided to increase my carbs just a bit (currently on 20g a day) and reduce my reliance on cheese and cream whilst increasing my intake of oily fish, avocados and olives and introduce some edamame beans every now and then just because I really like them....

Question: How many grams of carbs a day does everyone have? I've been in ketosis since January but feel now is the time to maybe slip out and stop losing weight. I don't want to undo all my good work in reducing my HbA1c in doing so.

And finally: If you don't mind, could you please share your latest lipid panel results with me so that I can judge whether mine are as alarmingly high as the doctor seemed to think!

We also discussed statins and he's of the mind that they are over-prescribed and not really that useful!!

I tend to keep my net carbs under 50g a day, a very good day is 40g. Most come from vegetables, the rest from oatmeal, full fat soy milk and my daily serving of full fat yogurt. I tend to avoid cheese, processed meat, red meat, cream, butter. I use olive oil sparingly so food doesn't stick to the pan. I do eat tuna once a week. But then I heavily restrict my calories as well. Latest cholesterol is Total 3.6, HDL 0.9, LDL 2.2. Keep in mind that I still have weight to lose, so this could be effecting the latest results.

Less than 5g, but through choice rather than necessity. If you increase your carbohydrate intake then your HbA1c will almost certainly creep up. By how much is anyone’s guess.

Edamame are soy though which may bring its own different issues ..
If you want to increase carbs (still not sure why you would want to ?) have more green veg (just watch out for oxalates)
If you aren't concerned about cholesterol they why try to change what you eat?
Bit of a logic paradox.. ?

I thought it might and I really don't want it to. What's your staple Jim?

I suppose the words "dangerously high" have made me think twice. But as I think on, I dont needs to increase carbs do? I just need to switch a couple of things - a little tweak here or there might make all the difference.

I keep to under 50g of carbs per day which keeps my HbA1c in the mid 30s.
My cholesterol results taken in April were:
