Ooh can I jump on too please?
The pharmacist at my surgery has just told me that my total cholesterol is 5.7
HDL is 1.2
LDL is 3.6
Ratio is 4.8
Triglycerides 2

She wasn't happy that I low carb and test frequently and has referred me to the dietician in the endocrine team but she said that the only good result is the HDL at 1.2.
How do they look to you?

Spicy food which is too hot. Nasty people who have no idea on your life journey but feel the need to comment and be cruel.

I didn't realise that this is for type 1s so I hope nobody minds me putting my results up. I find people on this forum to be much better informed than many of the medical professionals I've met.

My results never show triglycerides. Do you have to ask for those especially?
I don't know ElenaP. I asked because I had read on this forum what people posted and asked for the same information.

Hi.

My cholesterol keeps increasing. In the last 6 months it has gone from 5.3 to 7.7.

I feel a little hard done by as I stopped drinking completely in January, my control has never been better currently at 48, I've lost weight I'm considerably leaner a lot fitter than 18 months ago. Diet hasn't changed much. Generally healthy avoid ultra processed foods and eat lowish carbs.

The doctor mentioned statins again but knows I won't take them.

Any ideas?
keep one it will only get better
with better BG we are in better moods and that's how we have better BG Levels its one big circle:):):)

They will not do a T3 or a T4 test if your TSH levels are in range, under British Columbia guidelines.
Melgar, the new rules suck! BUT….every year I ask for a full thyroid panel and I pay for the “extras”…free t 4 and free t3 and antibodies as I have Hashimotos and am medicated for t4. Drives me nuts they won’t cover that cost, but it was around $50 a few weeks ago.

This thread was talking about cholesterol, and then thyroid levels were mentioned. Would someone, please, clarify to me if thyroid and cholesterol levels affect each other?
I have been taking thyroxine for a great number of years. Bloods are taken once a year to see thyroxine levels, but my Levothyroxine prescription remains at 50 micrograms. I doubt that GP surgery do the 'full panel'.

They can be Elena, and raised lipids is one of the potential symptoms of hypothyroidism. That said, there are a LOT of potential symptoms of hypothyroidism, and not everyone gets them all.

One thing I will say if that 50mcgr is a very low dose for T4. That is often considered a starter dose, although in older folks the starter dose is often 25mcgr.

As a rule of thumb, best guess requirements are usually looked upon as between 1.6 and 1.8mcgr per kilo of body weight. Of course, rule of thumb can be waaaaaaay off, and for me, it certainly is.

Only with full testing would you know if you need a tweak to your dosages. Maybe ask for a thyroid panel next time you are with your GP or Endo?

I am wondering if anyone has managed to lower cholesterol readings by eating low carb, or on diet alone (after refusing statins)?

I did. Here's a post with my lab results since having been diagnosed with diabetes: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/confused-by-dietary-advice.203600/post-2696347
Thank you @Antje77. Your charts are encouraging. Your example should give me the will-power to keep trying, in case it works for me also.

I have refused statins for several years, but earlier this week the endocrinologist was rather insistent that I ought to take statins, so I said I would consider them. The GP surgery has now messaged me to say that a prescription needs to be collected. However, I am now going to tell them that I will not start statins at least for three months.

Thanks.

At my Doctors check. I too got offered Statin's. Glad I said no. My consultant said last week. They're reading the results wrong. You're bad cholesterol is slightly high. Probably due to being type 1. However your good cholesterol is higher than a normal person. Which cancels it out. Hope this could be the case for you too. He said he would only suggest them in my condition if I had a family history of heart attacks.

My results from just a few days ago are ….a bit high
total 7.35
ldl 4.6 (yikes)
hdo 2.40 …amazing!
triglycerides 0.77, not too bad

i have lowered them before by taking plant sterols, just to make the doctor happy. It worked. I stopped taking them and bang… high again. Oddly the doctor hasn’t called me to say I’m dying.
I was strict carnivore for the past three months and am a lean mass hyper responder.
