Clean Keto

Am suffering from bloating and in pain for the last week. Have been following keto diet for 8 weeks and have lost 5.2kgs and gone down from size 12-14 to a loose size 10. My current weight is 66kgs and I am T2. I am due for next lot of testing early April and last test was 7.4.

After doing an online search it seems that this is common on keto diets, however when browsing through found quite a few references to clean keto as opposed to “dirty keto”. From reading the info on the difference between the two it seems that “clean keto “ would suit me better as I have always been a health nut and have felt that I still wasn’t getting all the nutrition that I needed. To further complicate the issue I have been doing OMAD for quite some time now as I wasn’t hungry.
I haven’t changed anything but over the last few days have been craving carbs. Apparently microbiomes are to blame.

I’m going to add 1/2 cup kimchi daily to my program but would be interested to get feedback from other members in regard to the clean keto eating. A good cook book / eating plan would also help.

Before this I rarely ate bacon, and don’t particularly like eggs.

Humans that only take.
Bio yogert was my fix. I always have 2 to 3 tablespoons with some double cream as a desert.
Once I started this I was much better. Less food cravings and a more regular no2 routine.

Can you explain what you mean by ‘clean keto’ as opposed to ‘dirty keto’.

I have seen the phrase ‘clean eating’ used quite often in recent years, but I have never really got a grip on what it means.
So many different explanations, and none of them definitive, as far as I can understand.

From what I have read, it is balanced eating with focus on vegetables, fat and a medium amount of protein. Most of the plate should be vegetables. Too much protein can still spike even if you are VLC.

The long term focus is on healthy balanced eating. Even though I have done well thus far, have been concerned with how I would go in the long run as it’s not just about getting my bgls down.
My husband loves the meals, but I pointed out to him last night that he is still eating way too many carbs for it to be effective for him and he will probably put weight on. He isn’t a diabetic btw.

I understood it to be eating a keto diet from pure foods as opposed to trying to replicate making bread and sweet things from low carb substitutes.

Me too, until I delved into it just a bit yesterday. Only found the info whilst looking for why I was so bloated. Seems like it’s time for me to now fine tune it all. So many opinions on line and so little time to figure out what’s the best. I use my meter a lot to check foods but not quite sure it’s telling the whole story. Will be interesting when I get my next set of tests done.

what is clean keto?
And also avoiding the ready made low carb stuff like bars etc. Things full of chemicals and ingredients although technically still low carb.

Dirty keto allows to eat anything so long as it keeps you under the magic grams of carbs. Clean keto has lots of rules about which foods are ok in addition to carb count.

Oddly my experience was the opposite and was almost immediately less bloated on keto.

Do you eat processed or artificial foods that are low carb? Use any sweeteners? Have you introduced stuff you didn’t eat before? Maybe it’s an intolerance you’ve discovered

I wasn’t bloated when I started. The only sweetener I use is a small amount in my coffee. Don’t eat processed foods at all and everything is cooked from scratch. I did wonder about a food intolerance but can’t pin what it would be. I thought the bloating could be perhaps a lack of fibre....but no bowel issues at all.

In your shoes if it’s ongoing not passing I’d go get checked by my gp. It may be nothing to do with keto just coincidental in timing.

I’d say this is pretty much me. No sugar no grains. No seed oils. No processed foods. No ready meals. No low-carb substitutes or “cheats”. Just real whole ingredients made into meals. Cream, cheese, meat, organs, fish, eggs, overground vegetables etc. I’m no Pete Evans in the kitchen but it’s amazing just how tasty meals can be when you make them yourself from real food and a bit of imagination.

I guess my diet is a kind of keto/paleo/primal hybrid with dairy. I’m aware that it probably sounds evangelical to most, but I don’t care. Whatever it is, it works wonders for my health and wellbeing.

So how about you give us an example of a days food intake..

I’m OMAD. Have a couple of coffees with cream before lunchtime, drink iced tea with mint after that until dinner which can be anywhere from 4.30 to 6pm depending on how hungry I am.

Didn’t eat on Sunday as I was in too much pain but Saturday’s dinner was Spicy chicken wings with cabbage that had been cooked in the chicken fat with bacon and creme fraiche. Also had a bowl of all raw salad Veges which included Camembert cheese and some walnuts. Dressing was ACV base with mustard and garlic. Don’t usually eat sweets.

The meal the night before was keto mousakka and it was so delicious that it immediately went into fav recipe book. I try to have a raw salad most days and it’s quite large as I have a bowl and just fill it what ever is available in the fridge making sure that it is either dressed with olive oil, ACV or a creamy blue cheese dressing. I also try to include avocado in it.

I haven’t found a definitive set of rules yet. The info is all a bit disjointed.

Every expert has their own rules. There lots of overlap but no one definition. We each find what works for us I guess, in terms of results verse long term sustainability and overall quality of life.

That’s true. I’m off now to investigate a shop down the road that specialises in organic whole foods etc and get myself some kimchi and some proper yoghurt. Just going to use these next couple of days being kind to my gut. Thanks for the input.

just a thought, but apple cider vinegar can cause issues for some people, depending on the combination of the meal. Its very acidic, and also some people can react to the fermented yeast with bloating.

or it could be unrelated to diet at all. Either way, I suggest seeing your GP to rule out anything other than dietary causes.
