I am new to this forum, pre diabetes, controlled by diet. and confused about fat and carbs. I have also just joined slimming world on a GP referral scheme. They tell me pasta and rice are free foods ie eat as much as you like along with veg, lean meat, fish and fruit, eat only low fat everything else, and no sugar. I need to lose a lot of weight so which is best, low fat or low carb?

You may want to change what Type you are on your profile as it's stating you are Type 1

I'd go low carb in your situation as carbs are what diabetics cant tolerate very well, healthy fats and exercise will help with weight loss

Welcome to the forum.

Carbs are sugars. If you develop T2 diabetes you won't be able to process carbs properly and your blood glucose levels will increase.

Slimming world, weight watchers are not qualified to advise diabetics on diet. There are diet sub forums, have a read and ask questions.

I use low carb high fat/keto to control my numbers. I only eat full fat products, fat gives you energy.

Hi there, I really don't know how they can say to someone with a glucose intolerance that 'pasta & rice' are free foods although I'm guessing Slimming world won't have a clue or care about one person's intolerances. Do you have to fill in a medical questionnaire before starting slimming world? From a diabetics perspective if you're going to eat pasta & rice 'freely' you may as well enjoy yourself and swap it for chocolate eclairs and a packet of lemon bon bons! I jest of course because there would be more of a nutritional benefit to pasta (just) but if I were you, I would read, read, read this forum, you might be surprised. x

I would be very concerned about advice that anyone who is prediabetic can freely eat rice, pasta and fruit. All high carb, therefore turned into high glucose inside the body.

I was told I was prediabetic a few years ago, lost some weight and my blood sugar went down into normal levels. Then I resumed eating carbs and a couple of years later I was diabetic.
This time round I went low carb knowing this is probably for life.
A side effect of getting my blood sugar back down was losing weight - while eating cheese, bacon, etc and having full fat greek yogurt and cream every day, and my blood fats stayed stable/improved too.

If you look at the carbs you'll see it's high in carbs, the first number, but the part that is actual sugar, the second number, is low. However all carbs turn to sugar in the body. Best to avoid really.

Slimming world give you a lovely leaflet if you are diabetic but that is not based on LC! There is a part of the plan called SP which is eating lower carb. There's a list which limits choice of food and takes refined carbs out. S is low calorie density veg and P is protein. However, it's not recommended for more than a few days. I definitely find eating LC easier than i did when on SW generally but then I also know that if I eat the wrong food I make myself ill.

As a very muscular and athletic twenty year old I was considered overweight - I had a 24 inch waist. I was given diet sheets, I was sent to a slimming club - and I got fatter and weaker and slower and sadder. All the advice was for high carb, low fat low calorie so at the age of 65 I was almost as round as I was tall and very overweight. I was diagnosed type two and told off for it too.
Now I am 68 I have been eating low carb, with fat, for three years and I feel great have lost a lot of weight, have lots of energy and I keep shrinking even when the scales show no great change. I am officially in remission, and plan to stay that way.
