Confused about eating

Hi I was diagnosed a few days ago and have been told to test before breakfast and two hours after tea.
The thing is she said it should be 5 in the morning and mine is coming out at 9. Something
And at night it's 11.5 instead of between 7 and 9
But I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have shreddies with skimmed milk for breakfast, toast wholemeal for lunch and an oven baked chicken breast with one piece of wholemeal bread with salad. And then before bed a very small apple.

What am I doing wrong? I can't exercise much as have a bad back, am I not drinking enough? Could that really make much of a difference to my BG levels?

Would appreciate any advise as winding myself up here.

Hi @Bobbles 2 ,

A warm welcome to the forum.

I notice from your profile you take insulin.
What insulin/s are you prescribed?

Hi @Bobbles 2 and welcome!

I’m tagging @daisy1 who will post some useful information for newbies, including about diet.

Your profile says you’re taking medication - can you let us know which medicine? That will affect the advice you get. Generally foods high in carbohydrates such as the cereals and bread you’re eating, will lead to increased blood sugar levels and should be reduced but this should be done with care if you are using certain medications.

I’d say that it’s all the carbohydrate in your diet that’s causing the high blood sugars - even though it’s whole grain, and is absorbed more slowly into your bloodstream, it still gets turned to sugar. A small apple can contain more than 10g pure sugar, which may typically raise your blood sugar by around 3mmol. Many type 2s find it beneficial to adopt a much lower carbohydrate diet, and make up the lost calories with healthy fats.

It is a minefield and a steep learning curve! I’m learning new things every day after 20 years - I’m type one so some things are a little different for me, however. There’s lots of type 2s doing low carb - there’s a separate forum for it in the diet and food section with tons of info.

Healthy good fat foods that I like include avocados, nuts, olives and salmon.

LOL, welcome to the mine field!

X the cereal and fruit :) You are about to get a diet education from this forum. Daisy's post will be your starting point.

Learn about "Carb Counting". A good guideline to start will be 30 Carbs for a meal, 15 Carbs for a snack. Yikes! No, you won't starve. Cheese is good, meat is good, poultry is good ... see, not all bad.

Stop the wholemeal bread, it can have from 13g to 17g of carbs, and your testing regime is not good, your morning test should be as soon as you get up and have washed your hands (as any natural oils on your fingers can throw out your results), then test before each meal and two hours after the first bite. You should keep a food diary as well, then you will soon see by your results which foods you can tolerate and which to avoid.

If you cut the cereal and bread it should help as they are both high in carbs that turn into sugar during digestion. Your high pre-breakfast reading is likely to be caused by what is known as the 'Dawn Phenomenon' due to your liver dumping glucose.
Don't worry, you'll soon learn how to manage your diabetes as have hundreds of folk here. It's a bit of a steep learning curve at first but you'll get there!
EDIT : I just realised you are taking gliclazide a sulponylurea and it can cause hypoglycaemia so you do need to keep an eye on your BG, certainly for a while to check it doesn't fall too low. Once you've got an idea about how your diet relates to your BG and you have it well controlled, as you will, you'll not need to worry about a 'hypo'. I've only ever had one and that was due to exceptional circumstances.

Thank you everyone, I'll cut the carbs down.
I'll have a yoghurt for breakfast low fat
And a salad with sardines for lunch
And a chicken breast with salad for tea for now and see how that goes.

Hi @Bobbles 2 you can have full fat yoghurt! Unless you want to lose some weight in which case you will need to be a bit careful of how much full fat yoghurt you eat!
You could add strawberries and/or seeds to your yoghurt to make it really yummy

I'm afraid that a lot of what type two diabetics are told - if what I was 'educated' about and what I have read is anything to go by - is not going to help at all.
Diabetes is all about the inability to cope with the amount of carbohydrate in the modern diet - so eating fruit - which contains sugars, and bread - starch is digested to form sugar, cereals - starch again - it is all going to raise your blood glucose.
Your low fat yoghurt will have added carbs - if it is like most low fat products. Full fat is much better for you. I eat the Lidl Greek style, which is 3.2 percent carbs. I also eat chicken thighs, cooked in the Tefal Actifry, which makes them nice and crispy, with mushrooms - button mushrooms tossed into the Actifry after removing the chicken - there are so many delicious things to eat.
You will have to eat some carbs to counteract the medication, which assumes you are eating enough carbs to cope with the effects.
Personally I prefer to do without medication and to rely of diet alone as it is a powerful tool to control BG.

I can't believe someone advised you to eat a piece of fruit last thing at night!!!! And, if you are on glicazide - you probably have a very high HBA1c/blood glucose level generally, ie your blood glucose regulation is at a pretty badly dysregulated level. (I say this as someone who was diagnosed at a level of 93, so I feel I can say this :).)

But I shouldn't be shocked and surprised still, with all the misinformation and disinformation out there for diabetics.

@Bobbles 2

Hello and welcome to the Forum :) Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you like and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 235,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:
  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Low fat yogurts are the devil’s work for diabetics. For example, a 175g pot cherry Muller Light contains 14g carbs of which 12g is pure sugar. Yet diet companies such as Slimming World recommend them as a food you can eat unlimited amounts of...

Fat is not the evil we have been led to believe.

Thanks so much for all the information, it's amazing the things I got told that are wrong!
Had a yoghurt for breakfast but it was a Muller light ☹️ so I'll try and limit the rest of my carbs, the problem is I don't like full fat yoghurt s as they are thick and I like runny lol!
For lunch I had tuna, lettuce, tomato and an orange for my carbs so sitting around 30g of carbs so far. Having 2 chicken breasts with lettuce and 2 tomatoes for tea so hopefully that will keep me low.

Thanks again for everyone's help and daisy I will look at your links now.
