Type 1
Hi I'm a type 1, have been for 36 years. Recently I have decided to lower my carb intake, less than 50g each day. I've done this as I've been struggling with my weight and sugars. Wot I don't understand is that the change in carb intake has not altered my blood results. I've kept to the same dose thinking I would have to lower it but this hasn't happened at all and in fact my test results are still running a little high. I am losing weight though (thank god) so is there a scientific explanation that I don't know about ? Would love some help with this please, thank you

Diet now consists of 99% protein. Eggs for b.fast. Protein with salads and veg (not root) for the rest of the day, occasional handful of nuts if hungry. I have never eaten so little. Insulin = novorapid and glargine at 1:1 I've kept my units the same and have had no need to change it as blood results are running @ 7-11. No hypos as expected ??

Protein and fat affects sugar levels so maybe thats why your levels are still a bit high

So I now have to inject more insulin because I eat protein rather than carbs and sugars ? Ohhh it's all too confusing !! Thanks for your reply though, much appreciated x

Agree, My levels will stay same if not eating, but if I have say just two eggs poached or soft boiled my levels can go up by 2 bg points. Yet if I just go without my levels will stay consistent... Same with plain cheese too..

Have you attended the DAFNE course?

Without seeing your carb intake, your your BG at the time of eating and your nova rapid intake for the meal it's hard to judge but the beauty of carb counting is the flexibility it allows you.

If your levels in the morning are at the higher end of your target range then maybe increase your BI. Counting carbs t 1:1 is a good guideline but you can slightly adjust the intake to bring your levels down, 1 unit in around 2-3 CPs so maybe just try adding an extra unit.

There is lots to take into consideration, the foods you are eating, how fast/slow the food turns into sugar....

How comfortable are you at carb counting? Another factor could be your calculations being slightly out...

Yeah I've done that course, the nurses told me off for not eating enough carbs !! Carb counting has helped but because I couldn't shift any weight I thought I would try and reduce them, just didn't realise meat and greens could make such an impact on my sugars. Thank you so much for your help. X

Happy to help.

To cut weight when diabetic it is hard, the additional exercise should bring your sugars down (and the weight) but you must be super careful. I spent a longtime being taught how to exercise carefully and it doesn't hurt to start a little higher on the BG....
