Hi

So I have to tell you guys the truth as it’s been bothering me.
I was diagnosed with pre diabetes in 2015 but doctor thought that I was taking Metformin that she had prescribed for PCOS (I wasn’t)
During the following year I had a few more tests all below 6.6.
After almost a year without a period (PCOS related)I started back on the Metformin on and off as I couldn’t stomach it everyday, I had another test and I was now 9.0 so I stopped the Metformin and levels went down to 7 something.
In Dec after two exotic holidays and a lot of stress, I ended up in hospital with levels in the teens so I went back on Metformin. I started with 500mg and worked up to 1g at this point my results were 10.0 so I decided to go the full 2g daily, my results are now 10.7.

I am eating better now than I was before. I cook for myself and have stopped stuffing haribos down my mouth.

The question is why is Metformin not working for me? Why am I better off according you HBaC1 results when not taking it? My meter has even had me down as average 8.0 and I testing 7 times a day on most days.

Also as a sickle cell trait patient dies this affect my result.

Thanks

NC

Yes sickle cell trait does effect HBA1C, there is a different type of test that works better with sickle cell

Fructosamine test
If your red blood cells are affected by, for example, anaemia, sickle cell anaemia or thalassaemia (all of which involve a lack of or abnormal type of haemoglobin – the oxygen-carrying part) then your doctor may carry out a blood test for fructosamine. Fructosamine gives an average result for the previous 14 to 21 days. If you normally have a fructosamine test, discuss your individual target with your doctor.

Metformin helps a little and double the dose does not mean double the benefits. There is a really good video someone posted about met research, I'll see if I can find it

What is it for then?
In your case, mainly PCOS. Metformin is an appetite suppressant and it brought back my periods and fertility. I have 2 gorgeous boys because of metformin and my PCOS. Oh and undiagnosed diabetes.

Hi there. I am also a sickle Cell Carrier, and I have always had to have Fructosamine tests done. I have also found that my Fructosamine results do not correlate with my spot tests in anyway!
