Hi All, Diagnosed with type 2 on jan 29 this year, Didnt have any symptoms, just went to Dr for h.g.v medical he picked it up on my urine sample. I dont feel any different, Dr put me on 1 500mg metformin per day also gave me some strips to wee on but didnt tell me how often or what the results mean, went to the diabetes nurse she told me off for not eating enough, very confused, i thought you were supposed to lose weight (not that i am overweight). Just found this forum today hope things will become clear the more i read

Welcome trucker2,

Thanks for the welcome, after reading a little more i am even more confused, the stuff i got from the nurse says eat more carbs and starchy foods but most on the forum say dont eat carbs. Should i get a blood glucose tester? The nurse said not to bother yet, why not yet? I think my head is going to explode with all this, suppose its early days yet

Hi Trucker,a blood testing monitor is an essential piece of equipment if you want to find out how certain foods affect your blood sugar levels.
There is a lot to take in at first but, like learning to drive ,it all comes together eventually.

Hi trucker2,

Carbs are the principal source of sugar in your bloodstream. As you know by now, diabetes is a condition typified by excess levels of glucose. The idea that eating more carbs will benefit a diabetic is clearly daft. We are all faced with this advice unfortunately, but the consensus amongst actual diabetics is that carb restriction is the most effective way of normalising blood glucose.

All the best,

fergus

Hi Trucker2

Firstly
Fergus is the uberexpert on blood sugar control
secondly
getting confusing advice from the medics is pretty standard
thirdly
Remember most members of this forum are diabetic and most Healthcare professionals are not.
We know what works for us.Often they haven't a clue what actually works, because they always blame failure on non-compliant patients. and folk like us oten don't tell them what does work. because they tell us not to do it.
You may be lucky  there are a few enlightened ones.
If in doubt try and if it works keep doing it, if it doesn't, ditch it and try something else.
I would recommend,1) you get a meter, 2) you try reducing your cab intake, 3)you read the diet and success stories threads on here,4) when you get to the point of specific questions, Ask US.

Eating too many carbs is like putting high octane petrol into your diesel engine.

Not testing is like driving without looking at the speedo.

Your nurse's job is to kill you so you no longer cost the NHS money.

Your job is to survive to **** her off <G>

LOL trinkwasser, think i will make it my mission in life to **** of the dn, have cut down on the carbs , made an app to see doc with a view to getting a test meter. My daughters friend is type 1, she said she will get me everything i need if i have to pay (nice girl). Been testing with the wee strips 4 times a day , the last 3 days all have been negative, could that be the metformin starting to work? Also doc said metformin might make me `loose` but has had the opposite effect on me, is that normal? Am thinking if the docs get it wrong about diet and carbs they might get side effects wrong as well lol. Going to wee on another strip speak later

Hi Fusilier,

Just a small correction - blood sugar monitors are not available on the NHS. Doctors are not allowed to write a prescription for one. But the manufacturers do give them away free to surgeries and sometimes doctors and practice nurses will give one of these freebies to a patient.
