Hi guys I got a few questions. I been on allot of medication for past few months especially antibiotics. My gut health got extremely bad. I went on the keto diet. I been having lots of blurred vision, feeling fatigued, headache, dry mouth, feeling thirsty. Today I fainted my blood glucose level was at 7.4 ( last tim I eat was 6 hours ago). I phoned my gp and he told me I am not diabetic. Its been 3 weeks since I been feeling like this. So i am not sure if its the diet or I am dietetic. I tested positive for ketones in my urine done my own test. My stomach feels much better but overall I feel like ****. I am not able to sweat to. I didnt touch anything with sugar content for over a month. I got feq questions. One is it possible I am diabetic? How should I introduce carbs i am scared my insulin levels will spike up quickly

You are going through a tough time.

How does your doctor know you are not diabetic? Which tests did you have, when did you have them, and what were the results?

What exactly have you been eating?

Medications can cause raised levels, as can illness and pain. The symptoms you describe could be diabetes symptoms, but could also be other things.

I went to minor injuries today they took my glucose levels and it showed up at 7.4. I phoned my local gp and told him that I fainted again and I been on keto diet. He blamed everything on the diet and told me I am not diabetic. I know Lloyds pharmacy do free tests so I will try to get one. I beeon on the diet for 3-4 weeks and I didnt touch a carb or sugar. I had lots of thrush in my mouth which is 80% gone since it feeds on carbs and sugars since the diet and my stomach improved but I lost 15kg!. The reason I was on antibiotics I had tooth infection then next month staph infection and since that I felt very weak.

my diet : Chicken, turkey, spinach, bio yogurt, blueberries, broth, tuna, salmon, avocados and so on. The other thing is i dont feel hungry and sometimes i do I only eat maybe 1000cal a day my appetite been weird. I boxed for over 8 years and since all this stuff I been just in pain. Especially the headaches with blurred vision been annoying.

and for 3 days now I been taking probiotics and some vitamins to stop my muscle twitching but its still there.

My advice is to make an appointment with the doctor and ask for the diabetes diagnostic test, which is an HbA1c. It strikes me you also need a thorough check up.

The 7.4 was a random test, which is meaningless. It doesn't show whether you are diabetic or not diabetic. Simply by visiting the minor injuries centre after fainting and feeling poorly could have caused that level. Stress is a major factor in raising levels - irrespective of food.

LLoyds pharmacy does this test :
Depending on the results of this test, we may ask you to come back for further assessment. This will include:

  • A fasting blood glucose test, which involves taking a sample of blood when you have an empty stomach (usually first thing in the morning before you have breakfast)
  • Weight, height and waist measurement
  • Additional blood pressure measurements

Will that be fine ? My doctor is annoyed with me I been going to gp allot... he thinks am over exaggerating but I been feeling so ill...I am just trying to find out what caused my body to collapse.

Do you think If I rise my carbs now will it affect me badly? I was thinking about adding a half cup of buckwheat and just rising my carbs slightly. The no carb diet maybe put additional stress onto my body

The Lloyds pharmacy test is not an HbA1c. It is simply a finger prick blood glucose test. If you think you are diabetic you need the proper test, an HbA1c. Only your doctor can arrange this. This test is a measure of a sort of average of your blood glucose levels over the previous 2 to 3 months. The finger prick tests are just a snap shot of what you are at the time of the test.

However, there is no harm in making an appointment with the pharmacy, but it will not give you a diagnosis either one way or the other.

Thank you for the reply. My doctors been pretty mean to me and I dont think they will test me for dibeties. I always hear the same thing your young peter your fine. Now they heard I been on Keto diet they will just blame that for all my symptoms.

I found this website : https://www.medichecks.com/diabetes Which test do you think I should do its private blood tests. I am willing to pay than sit with the doctors and listen how its all stress and I am over exaggerating. I been always in amazing shape lost all my muscle mass all motivation just dont know what to do anymore

I can't advise you further. You must do as you think fit, but should you do this private test and the result says you are diabetic, you will still need to see your doctor for the correct treatment.

Can I just add please that
you need to really analyse your diet for vitamins and
Minerals. You are on a very low carb.. blueberries have somebcarbs in, same as avocado.

However the foods you list are not giving you complete minerals and vitamins.

You may well be having carb flu like symptoms and that could be affecting you.

Yes, ketosis may help some if they wish to do for epilepsy or diabetes.. or other reasons but its not all about ketosis.. you must look at vitamins such as iron and b12 etc and ensure you are getting adequate sources.

I'm limited with my foods through health issues but I ensure that I have broccoli everyday for iron etc...
you are not listing any green veg...

Before paying out monies privately please look more carefully at your vitamins and minerals.

Professor Robert Thomas does a whole range of blood tests for £295 and this includes omega 3,6,9 etc and a very thorough analysis.

Personally I would relax about blood tests until you have more essential vitamins and nutrients.

So do you think I should just add carbs and eat more vegetables ? I did eat broccoli and others veg but I think i didn't eat enough calories through the day. I might give the private test a go

I agree with @donnellysdogs, your diet is not very comprehensive in terms of vitamins and minerals. Some of the symptoms that you have mentioned are also indicative of many nutritional deficiencies, which can be quite easily remedied.
It's easy to become deficient without realising it - I have a Vitamin D deficiency, and before this was found out, the GP sent me for tests for Rheumatoid Arthritis, because the symptoms were so severe. So, deficiencies can really be quite uncomfortable.

Also, do you mind me asking... do you suffer from anxiety? Anxiety can manifest in many different ways, and cause many different symptoms.

I cannot tell you what to eat but only advise that I can see from the foods you have listed that you are deficient in a whole range of vitamins and minerals.

I am not talking protein or carbs etc.

Are you needing to eat just 1000 cals a day to lose weight? Or are you a reasonable size? You mentioned previously boxing so are you still exercising?

Honestly, its easy to google vitamins in every food you have listed..even if you dont know the weight of the food it will highlight how out of sync the range of vitamins is. Taking a multi vitamin tablet will not help as you could then be excessive in some.

Its up to you whether you pay privately now for a test.

I think also that anxiety is possibly a factor and this can also cause overall wellbeing problems.

Also if I thought you were diabetic and in need of meds I would be telling you.
From what you are saying I do not think your levels are significant to be overly concerned. Many diabetics would be controlled by diet, some need injections or tablets but if I was you or your Mum I would be addressing food first.

Thank you very much for all the messages. I just bought some multivitamins, magnesium, and going to add slowly some carbs into my diet. I was usually at 85kg very muscular now I am only 68kg skin and bones. Lost all this weight in around a month. The reason I was only eating 1000cal a day is the antibiotics made my appetite to go away and also with conjunction with keto diet i think my appetite is decreased. I will slowly try to up my calories. If it comes to anxiety I am usually a calm person but since May and all this infections my stress levels been very high. I got a CT scan for my abdomen and pelivs in 4 days to find out if maybe something is restricting my food habbits and colonoscopy next month.

My sleeping pattern been a mess to. I will try to eat more balanced diet. My stomach felt better on keto but I just lost too much weight and eat not enough calories. I will still try to have the glucose test tomorrow and see how it goes .
