i have for the past year suffered really bad constipation and have had to result to enemas and suppositories. My Dr knows as he prescribed me laxative. However when I last spoke to him and mentioned the constipationhe said Drs aren't really interested in Constipation.
Have now asked to be referred to local Diabetic clinic but would welcome any advice

Can I ask, have you noticed any slow down in how food affects your blood sugar (if you test it)?
It seems like when I'm very backed up, I don't peak until 3-4hrs after a meal, which means my insulin comes on too quickly.

Have you changed your diet greatly recently?
I supplement with magnesium citrate - a teaspoon each night with my apple cider venegar in sparkling water.. keeps me very regular.. sometimes a bit too regular!

Ok.. for chronic constipation you need a referral to a gastro enterologist.

However, constipation can be caused by a lot of dietary factors..

Some need high fibre, some low.

The other thing is that dulcolax sugar free liquid can be taken every day and will help. Movicols and laxido's are hopeless compared to the dulcolax.
Dont take tablets, as tsking it by liquid you have more opportunity to measure doses out according to how bad you are.

The reason for your constipation could be due to slow colonic transit if its not due to your diet.
For this to be tested you need to ask a consultant. Its a simple test. Swallow either 20 or 60 tiny markers that are in capsules. 3 days later an xray, sometimes 5 days later...
Where the markers are and how many show on the xray. Ideally you shouldnt have any still in you but I hd 58/60.....scattered all around the colon...

My gastro chap gave me lubiprostone (amitiza) but these are only prescribable by a consultant. They should only be taken for two weeks or a maximim of 4 weeks. My consultant kept me on them for over 12 months.

Then someone suggested I buy a vibration platefor another reason. I have found that going on this for 3 x 10 min sessions with my dulcolax now keeps my colon moving. My hubby goes on it and within 20 mins has to go to no2!! He has no problems. It enabled me to stop the lubiprostone.

The other thing is, you say constipated.. are you still managing to go every day. Mine was less than every 6 days.

In emergencies I was given picolax sachets to drink. This cleans the whole of too to bottom out... and much better and easier than enemas. If bad constipation the phospate 125ml enemas are better than the tiny 5ml ones.

I used to be the same as well.

People are told to eat high fibre to get better motility but some persons with slow colonic transit will be betterboff with low fibre foods. Ie rice crispies, no veg or fruit with skin or pods or stringy like runner beans...no skin on cucumber, and no leafy food like lettuce....

It depends on the individual though.. some people do need more fibre but for some its the worst thing for them..but everybody needs to work it out for themselves...
