Could Coffee gave a false positive Type 2 diagnosis ?

Coffee can spike me. I’m also so addicted that not drinking coffee can spike me. Causes a dilemma on test day.

I arrange my test early in the morning, then I chew on a couple tablespoons of freeze dried in the waiting room waiting for my results.

I think you would do well to wean yourself off coffee if you are that addicted.
 
Probably a teaspoon of coffee then 3/4 cup of hot water and the rest double cream added. The amount of coffee can vary as I tend to just pour it in straight from the jar... so possible could be as high as 2.5 teaspoons at a time.
So just instant with no sugar or anything added ? In that case I'd be surprised if it was the cause of T2... as others have suggested using your meter test with it and without it and you should see if it causes you any problems. Plus of course if you feel better without it then...

Just another word of encouragement along your journey.
With a HbA1c of 51 you'd only just tipped over he diagnostic level of >47.
It should not take massive lifestyle & dietary changes on your part to get back to pre-diabetic levels 42-47 or even normal <42.
I've seen people post on here with an initial diagnosis in the 100s & the 3 month follow up back in the 30s.

That is the power of knowledge of testing your BG & what can be gained from low carb.
You've got this.
 
Back In January I had many symptoms that concerned me and led me to get checked by my Doctor and they did the tests and came back I was just in the area of being diabetic type 2 I think 49 was the starting number and I was 51.
So, while coffee can trigger a glucose dump, your body should be able to cope with it, which it can't, which still indicates T2. To simplify it a ridiculous amount.

So if the caffeine in the coffee is the culprit triggering the dump... Have you tried decaf? :)

Firstly, I very much doubt that coffee can cause T2 symptoms including borderline HbA1c but of course everyone is different.

You are convinced that you are dehydrated because your urine is always dark coloured.
This is of course possible.
You don't mention what else you drink, nor how much.

One way to make sure that you are drinking enough is to drink plain water until your urine is a pale straw colour.
This could involve drinking perhaps 2 litres over a couple of hours.
[Two pints of fizzy lager might also do the trick, if you drink such things. :) ]
If you drink a large amount of plain water but you don't wee out an equivalent amount over the next few hours then something else may be going on and you should discuss this with your health care team.
Also, if you do wee out the large amount of fluid but your urine is still very dark coloured then this is not usual, and needs investigating.

Again, long term dehydration may convince your body to hang on to some extra water but I am not convinced that this reaction would continue if you, for example, drank a lot of plain water over a period of three days or more.

As a side note I drink a cup of very strong coffee with butter and cream each morning, but generally no more coffee later in the day.
My BG rises in the morning, but testing with decaff and not drinking coffee shows that my BG rises anyway so coffee doesn't seem to be the main cause.
 
I struggle to have straw coloured urine even with massive amounts of water so coffee as you can imagine causes more issues.

I've had a non functioning adrenal glands in the past which required steroids to get them kickstarted. They function well now according to testing however I do tend to now get elevated cortisol quite easily.

But yes best way to get round this is simply get a test kit and see what its doing when consumed..

Hi @fendertele , I’m personally am not familiar with the meter in your link. However here’s info about meters used by loads of members here. As has already been said is the ongoing cost of strips you probably want to consider.

Cheers ordered and on its way with 100 strips :) will no doubt pop back when I have it to read stickies on useage but will be able to now start seeing which foods I can eat in small doses if need be

Sugar free soda contains sweetners. Some sweetners affect some peoples bg. They also have other bad effects and have highly processed chemicals and can be addictive.

I question the minimum here, that’s a lot and over the recommendations. NHS recommends 6 to 8 glasses which seems to be about 1.8 litres plus the 2.5 litres often discussed is based on a 1945 study that includes water from other sources

we don’t just hydrate from water. Plus there is a risk that drinking too much water can also cause issues.

So one size doesn’t fit all

Also regarding coffee dehydrates. This has been investigated and people can produce more Urine after but overall you have absorbed water from the coffee so the net effect may not be as much as sone articles make out, if at all.

I do drink a lot of water on workout days... mainly during a workout but then neglect it on the off days completely Ill need to get into the habit of drinking water outside of workouts.

I mean during a workout im drinking 3 litres with some added electrolyte powder but then as mentioned neglecting it once home.. moving to mostly diet soda>coffee>small bottles of water.

So yeah new plan keeping water at my side with a sprinkle of electrolyte powder in it to keep it topped up incase I end up drinking too much.
 
Coffee won’t give false hba1c readings so you are either diabetic or not

Can coffee give odd feelings or raise you bg.. maybe yes.. one way to find out is try cutting it out or try a differ coffee or decaf

Either way your hba1c was in the diabetic range and had you not changed diet you would still be there.. and if you stop the diet then you will probably return there

Personally coffee doesn’t affect me.. but I am T1
