Could it be diabetes?

I had a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removed) in September 2022 after cholycystitis. I was fine up until October 2023 and all of a sudden started persistent nausea and vomiting at first I thought it was stress as I was going through a lot of stress at the time. Been to the GP several times and my GP is at a loss as they've done stools tests, blood tests and urine tests but nothing shows on the test results

Hi @ok1982 , we cannot diagnose on the forum, it goes against forum rules. However if you are worried about diabetes ask your GP for an HbA1c test, the diagnostic tool used to confirm or deny diabetes.

Eventually went and got checked out at A & E last night with nausea, weight loss of more than 6Kg in less than 4 months increased thirst. The answers that I got was uti, gastritis and diabetes but they didn't say what type the doctor said something about oral medication, and they ended up giving medication for the uti and gastritis and the doctor said that she will get the gp to prescribe medication for the diabetes

If they're going for oral meds, they're likely assuming type 2. UTI's are a common occurrence with high blood sugars, so that makes sense. Can't comment on the gastritis, but you've basically been hit with a lot in one go, so just get busy right now with getting better. Mind you, if you drop blood sugars down some, the UTI'll vanish quicker too, as the bacteria rather love the glucose in your urine, and thrives on that. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html explains about T2 and foods some, but there's more ways to skin that cat, so if a change in diet isn't an option for you (not saying that you're eating bad things, just things that don't suit your metabolism, which others might not have any problems with at all!), there's medication that can help, too. Or have a mix of both. Whatever works for you.

For now though, like I said, just concentrate on feeling better, then tackle the rest of it. Honestly, I have a whole lot of conditions, and I'd be a blessed woman if they were all as easily managed as my T2, so it's not as daunting as it may seem at first glance. You'll be okay.

Get well soon!
Jo

Please please ask to have the proper checks to clarify type. Do not let the medical profession assume type 2. A 6kg weight loss and nausea does not necessarily mean gastritis. I had severe nausea and actual sickness prior to my type 1 diagnosis. It was my body trying to rid itself of the excess sugar.

What checks do I need to ask for to clarify the type? I have to admit when I get the nausea and vomiting it's severe.

You need to check for ketones, which you can do yourself through either urine test or finger prick, if you have a meter that can handle those strips. If you're not on a ketogenic diet and eating regularly, rather than fasting they shouldn't be present. High ketones and high blood sugars combined are a problem and an emergency situation.

The blood tests you want for type are are, I think, C-peptide, GAD and possibly Homa-R, though I might be missing one? (Anyone feel free to add!). The GP won't be able to order Homa-R most likely, that's a specialist's area. Not sure on the other two, and sometimes they can't interpret the results.

Don't let this go. If you're ill, and it does sound like that's not going away, do call 111!

There are 4 antibody types associated with the development of T1DM / LADA, islet cell autoantibodies (ICA), antibodies to insulin (IAA), glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAA or GAD) and protein tyrosine phosphatase (IA2 or ICA512). Ask for all 4 as not everyone produces GAD antibodies with type 1.

Ed for spelling error.
