Hello , do you all have your COVID jabs? I'm a newly diagnosed Type 2 but diet controlled (HbA1C is now 42) . Do I need my COVID jab if I continue to control my blood sugar with diet? I'm happy to have my flu jab but just wonder what you all feel about COVID injections. Thank you !

I have the jab for two reasons
- although having well managed diabetes has not been shown to increase the risk of covid, when I did get it, it made my diabetes harder to manage and raised my BG.
- if my chance of getting covid is reduced, the chance of me passing it on to someone else who may be more at risk, is also reduced.

Covid, like any other virus, can really muck up your blood sugars. And contrary to what virii usually do, Covid can potentially cause a hypo-ish drop rather than a rise in some. Personally I'd be getting the jab again, if I didn't get C19 every three months or so. I come in a lot of places where ill people tend to be, so I get "lucky" often. My antibodies are present and accounted for. But if you haven't had an infection recently, with all the mutations and whatnot, I'd seriously consider getting it... I know I'd have gotten a jab scheduled on the 16th of September, when they became available again in the Netherlands for the "vulnerables", if I hadn't had an infection in the past few months. In the end though, the choice is yours. Just some things to consider, you know. Recent infections, how are your antibodies doing, etc.

Good luck deciding!

I’ll be getting my COVID shot. We have been advised here in Canada to wait until the fall when new batches of vaccines are out with the new strains. We are lucky here as we still get free COVID testing kits. I hear you don’t in the UK.
I get the shots as I developed sepsis when I had pneumonia (Strep bacteria) a few years back. I never want to go through that nightmare again.

Hello @VioletViolet I'm also hba1c 42. I've had covid a few times (the nature of the beast with my job) Having covid puts my BG numbers up a little but the jab never does and I get the covid/flu combo yearly. I think everyone is different but I'd far rather have the protection than the disease.

Anything healthy!
I’ve not had any Covid jabs since the 3rd one which gave me a banging headache for a whole week and I wasn’t able to move my arm for a few days after. don’t have a flu jab either.

I'll be getting mine in a week or so, no question in my head about it.
The actual virus will play havoc with your insulin, therefore blood glucose. (sorry, I should say could - no way I can know what Covid will do to you..)
But - as everyone is saying, this is a personal choice.

I reacted like this, had to go to bed for 2 days, not keen on either, got too many medical considerations.

Each to their own on whether you get it or not, it is recommended for people who have Diabetes. I had covid in 2021 and aside from my blood sugars not being very happy I was relatively okay but everyone reacts differently. I've had 5 (I think) covid jabs with my last being in 2022 but I refuse to have any more after my 5th one made me feel worse than I did when I had covid. That's my personal choice though.

I have COVID now. I wouldn’t have even known it, save my brother testing positive. He is type 1. Several days ago, my food started tasting bitter, and I couldn't smell the jasmine outside. I tested positive. I will not be able to have my covid shot now for a few months. I think it a personal choice. I’ve had all the boosters as and when they came out. The Only side effect I had from the shots , save for the first one, was an aching arm. For me, as I say it’s a personal choice, I am not prepared to take the chance on this unpredictable virus, but that is just me.

Had both jabs last Saturday, same as last year only feel a bit unwell the following day after the injections but all fine after taken one ibuprofen.

No change to BG level, this morning at 8:30 was 5.5. Had breakfast around 9:30 and just tested now show 5.2.

Had both ours last Thursday. Arms hurt for 3 days. Husband a non diabetic needed to be within sight of a toilet for 24 hours and my sugar levels were very elevated for 48 hours. Had to up the insulin big time. Back to normal now. Having not had covid I have no idea what effect it will have on me. So would rather err on the side of caution. Flu I had years ago and was totally floored for 2 weeks throughout Christmas. A week later Type 1 diabetes. 10 years this January. Had flu jab every year since.

I will be having mine in a couple of weeks, in the hope it means I can't pass illness on to any one else, especially my loved ones.

If I was offered it, I would take it
Anyone diagnosed with diabetes is eligible in England. As well as other categories (like over 65’s) when you go online to book (https://www.nhs.uk/book-a-coronavirus-vaccination/covid-self-referral) it says this

As you're under 65 you're only able to get a COVID-19 vaccine if you:
  • have a serious long-term health condition
  • are having treatment or medication that means you are at increased risk
  • are pregnant
  • are in long-stay residential care home for older adults
  • are a frontline health and social care worker or staff working in care homes for older adults
You might be asked some questions at the pharmacy to check you're eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.

If you are not sure, you can read more about who is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Yes, I am eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine
No, I am not eligible

Diabetes is a serious long term health condition as defined by the rules. My surgery instructed me to tick “Yes I am eligible..” as a result.

Had all the flu and Covid jabs offered since diagnosis. So far nothing worse than being a little more tired and a bruised arm if anything at all as side effects. Flu done yesterday and Covid booked for a couple,of weeks time (no appointments locally til then that I can make).

My first experience with Covid hospitalised me sept 2022 (just before a booster was due). Blood glucose control has been more difficult ever since along with other effects that lead me to believe I had slowly dissipating long Covid. Second experience at the beginning of this year, a few months after the booster, wasnt so bad and I just felt really rough.

I do wonder whether to continue sometimes (especially reading about the awful outcomes for a tiny minority) but I never want to go through what I did in 2022 again and I accept every single medication or vaccine has the potential for unwanted outcomes. Fortunately the most serious are rare and I’ve decided the risk is less than for the vaccines than Covid poses for me. My healthy adult kids understandably would make different choices. No one can make the choice for you and antibodies through infection can be included in weighing up the choice too.

edit for minor typos

I got the Moderna booster today. Got the flu vaccine last week. I got post covid syndrome last year, after a relatively mild case of covid. Just got smell/taste back a couple of months ago. Some symptoms linger. Sorry, just realized this is type 2 thread…..
