No Quinine is not an anti-malerial drug but used as a paliative after infection and sometimes used ongoing which I feel can be dangerous especially as here in parts of Indonesia Malaria and Diabetes go hand in hand.

hanadr said:Cramp is not well understood. i get it not only in the legs, but in odd places like my ribs and neck. A cardiologist friend told me to take some Sea salt up to bed with me and takea few crystals. My Veterinary surgeon/ Olympian [Mexico 1968 GB team] brother says that's rubbish!. Take your pick. I find salt gets it out of the muscles without hurting them. Stretching hurts them.

Well I had very bad cramp during the night, sometimes in both legs at the same time. I am not on a low carb diet. A colleague at work has the same problem, also not a low carb diet. What I took after suggestions from the forums is a Magnesium supplement. Since taking this I have very rarely had any pains in my calf mussels.
Hope this helps

Also, as far as I understand it, you can't OD on magnesium - you just excrete the excess. Rather rapidly! It's never happened to me  .
I sometimes get very strange twisty cramps down the outsides of my feet and legs - must remember to note if they coincide with forgetting the magnesium.
