Hi, was just looking to see if anyone else is trying the new DD Hava app. I've been recording my meals on it since 4th Jan. Think I'm getting the hang of it now but find I have to plan meals carefully if I'm to hit the protein target. In fact I've had to get some protein shake powder as was constantly failing to meet their target. I must have been eating insufficient protein for years. I'm also doing Dry January so hopefully if the satiety is working its helping me not to snack instead of drink .

Are you using Hava and how you finding it?

I registered for it, but then saw it was a free trial and you had to give a credit card. I stopped at that point. Sad really, as I would like to try it. Most of what is said makes sense to me.

Yes I would normally have thought the same but DD and Jason Fung were my lifelines when I was diagnosed Type II 9yrs ago so I'm happy to register. So glad I found them.

I'm thinking of getting the trial , how does it differ from low carb in practice ?

Diet Doctor was a revelation to me and helped so much. I just have a hunch that Hava is aiming to be more of a mainstream thing, and I suspect that DD with its clear and undiluted low-carb focus is better suited to my metabolic circs. But I am very interested to hear how people get on with Hava.

As I've been low carbing for 9yrs it's kind of automatic for me now so the foods I buy and choose to eat all fall in the low carb region. I'm finding using Hava does influence what I choose to eat as I'm mindful of how my meal is being scored by the app so I sometimes make changes so the score is better. The major change for me has been having to up my protein intake. It seems Ive been eating inadequate amounts of protein for a long time particularly since I've cut out breakfast and only eat 2 meals daily. The App gives a running score of all your major nutrient intakes as the day progresses. The satiety scoring I find interesting and surprising at times. My regular 1st meal of berries, yogurt, nuts, seeds was not scoring very highly so I now often have cottage cheese instead of the yogurt. And I've taken to having a high protein shake daily (The Fast 800 shakes are low carb). The App is still in development so it will be interesting to see how it will change . I'm currently on a free trial but based on my experience so far I'll probably sign up to pay. I do find using technology helps me stay ontrack and be mindful of what I'm eating.

How does it differ to other Apps where you can record your daily food intakes with free versions ie Carb Manager and cronometer. Have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Hi, I think much of what I've said to VioletViolet answers some of your question. I've used the DD App and site for some years and yes, found all the articles and recipes extremely good, informative and applicable to my situation. But for me I'm finding recording the daily, mundane food choices I make very helpful. As I need to loose weight hopefully the satiety factor will help.

As I understand the Satiety factor of what you eat is their main measurement. So you are aiming to eat foods that keep you feeling full and not hungry after each meal.

Thank you that's really helpful. My protein intake is awful so I think I will sign up !

Speaking as somebody who just needs to continue to control my T2D remission rather than both BG and weight, I find my Low Carb way of eating to be satiating (only 1 meal per day on weekends) and according to many online sources my protein intake is higher than I need.

I don't see the point of HAVA and was disappointed when DD changed focus - thank goodness they saw sense and didn't ditch the original DD site as they had first proposed.

Interesting points with the HAVA. Wouldn’t we know when we’ve reached satiety? I don’t think I’d need an app to tell me that and as @ianf0ster has mentioned there is a lot of info on how to calculate how much protein we need - the one I’ve seen repeated often is for every pound of ideal weight we are, we need 1g of protein ie ideal weight 147lbs = 147g of protein a day. I would, in this case, rely on an app to calculate the protein, as an egg weighing 60g doesn’t provide 60g of protein.
I need to eat more protein and I intend to sort that as I started carnivore this week for 30 days (maybe ketovore to help me with the transition), although I’m not giving up my coffee! :D

Yes, I'm trailing it at the moment, as it's had 3 months free trail, but honestly, after the trail, I wouldn't buy and waste my money. I find It's frustrating to use at times food items are not word wraped, so you have to click on the item to see if it's what food you're after and half the time it's not and I find it fiddly to use to add food items you have eaten at times. I don't use it to tell me satiety but more for how much protein and carbs I'm eating as I dont always meet my daily quota at times.

I find it thinks everything is premade food. Although it uses photo technology, it can pick some of the food items when you take photo of food plate but if it's incorrect you then I have to manually add food items individually, which I found fiddly you can't create and add your own recipes, which I find annoying as I cook a lot of my meals

They have recipes, but you can't do a search for a recipe, so you have to manually scroll through pictures to pick a recipe.

Thank you for your reply, its Interesting to hear there has been little progress in the development. I was doing the initial trial when I posted back in January but gave up shortly after posting this tread, for same reasons you give. Such a shame as Diet Doctor itself is such a good resource and helped me enormously when I was Ist diagnosed T2 10yrs ago.

Hava is a different approach, it’s nothing like Carb Manager.
I actually spoke to Andreas regarding my Type 2 and the fact I’d been on Low Carb for 12 years, he advised me to keep a track on my Carbs, as after having Diabetes for so long, my pancreas may or may not now, be able to handle a Carb increase.
The Satiety Score is a Satiety to Calorie value and you’d be surprised at the scores of some things that you thought were filling
I’ve been using the app for a week or so now and find it very good, bit pricey but, once you get a feel for the foods and know what you can eat, then using it as a free logging app would be fine.

Main thing I like is, the AI feature, where you can type a question about a certain food item and you’ll get an answer and the offer of having a recipe for that item, the info you get is very good.

Up to now I haven’t had any bad BS experiences and have, in fact, lost a couple more pounds in weight, also i am able to have meals that suit both me and the wife, so don’t need to prep 2 different meals.

It does require a modicum of planning and tweaking of foods, obviously you can’t go and stuff a whole Cornish Pasty down (well you can but you won’t hit your Satiety Target and your BS would probably suffer)

I suppose it’s more of a weight loss app and less of a Diabetic one but, type into the AI Chicken Recipe for Diabetic or Low Carb Recipes and up they’ll pop.

I’ll see where I am in a month or two and Dr Eenfeldt has asked me to report back to him too.

Hi, I was introduced to the Hava lifestyle and alough I do love meat (which makes my protein targets more acheivable) I have found some breads that are incredibly high in protein.
Their pizza bases actually has more protein per 100g than steak, and as I don't get any sugar spike from their products it gives me a good satiety result too.

Just be a little careful with this - even if all of that is totally true, and you eat something which contains as much protein as steak in a pizza base - what you are eating is still starch and protein powder - not steak.

Your body will break down steak using bile and digest the fat and protein together - this is what it's meant to do.

If you load a bunch of starch and protein powder into the mix, you body will react totally differently. How it will react may be unique to you, you may find that the additional protein powder (which is almost certainly plant protein, not animal protein) does not give you a sugar spike, but it will have an effect on insulin, and there is plenty of research that shows that too much protein without the fat actually drives elevated insulin.

but - if it's working for you...
