DESMOND course....

Lucy

Here's some more information concerning PAID, and does include a list of some of the research it's based on at the bottom
http://www.musc.edu/dfm/RCMAR/PAID.html and here's another article http://journal.diabetes.org/diabetesspe ... 1/pg36.htm

Here's a couple research papers for diabetes and depression...

Hope this helps a bit..

Thank you Jopar, interesting stuff. I couldnt get the bottom 2 links to open but the rest i could open.

The ones I could open focussed on the psychological effect of receiving diagnosis, and the change in relationships of those around us. Is there a study to show that the actual physical side ffects of diabetes can cause depression, not just the mental adjustments of living with a long term life changing illness?

I've edited the bottom two links, so hopefully they will work now

Here's a couple that I've found which seems to deal with complications

But I think that it seems, unless they specifically rule out complications, that these tend to be taken as part of the parcel side of some studies..

Psychological side of our condition is now receiving the attention is is should, more so in Paediatric side of thing, with the Paediatric diabetic departments now getting diabetic specialist psychiatrist access...

One of the problms that I've encountered with those whose job it is to advise diabetics on diet, is that they follow tick boxes with very little understanding of what happens to food in the body.
I once met a Diabetes "Educator", who insisted that carbs are essential and still couldn't tell me why. This woman had a Ph.D
With people lik4e that running DESMOND, it's not likely to be a very useful experience.

PS I;m not certain that dieticians study metabolism. I'm sure nurses don't and doctors may have a couple of hours study out of years of training.

I got the information today about the DESMOND course i am going on 25th June.

It says to bring a packed lunch, but drinks and biscuits are provided

I have to laugh of I would cry

Oh God i know!! It's REALLY awful and that's me being kind!! I couldn't keep quiet at the ludicrous and Anti Low carb teachings and I was told very nicely that this course probably wasn't suitable for me(In so many words) I felt myself burning up and I must have been the colour of a cooked Lobster!!

I went on an X-PERT course recently. I must admit that I found the majority of it very useful. I didnt know anything about diabetes but learnt a lot. I did tell the nurse who was running it that my readings went down quite a lot by doing low carb with immediate effect. She didnt say that I shouldnt do it - I think her hands are tied and that they have to follow the NICE guidelines and concentrate on the "eatwell plate". The nurses who ran it also believe in testing to see what works for you. The people I was on the course with were very helpful as well and we had quite a laugh while doing it.

It is of course not for everyone. I did it across six weeks, one morning a week and the company I work for kindly gave me the time off to go without losing either money or holidays or having to make time up so was very lucky there.
