Can anyone offer advice or assistance. I am type 2 diabetic, taking gliclazide, metformin and simvastatin for cholesterol and ramipril for blood pressure.
Had chest infection , 12 December, and went to doctor who gave me antibiotic, erythromycin . The infection is clearing up and had last two tablets to take when I developed diarrhoea , which occurs only in the morning. Finished the antibiotics as you should but still have diarrhoea..8 days now. No stomach cramps and it just happens early morning between about 5-7 am. Has this happened to anyone else? Doctor said the antibiotic could cause diarrhoea! Appetite not great and try to a little. Was prescribed diorlyte ut sugar levels shot to 12.5 so just taking water to drink. Can anyone offer assistance?

I've been on antibiotics before and had the runs but not 8 days after, if I were you I'd go back to see your gp and discuss.

I try to operate the three-day rule; in that if I have a problem such as this i will suffer it only for three days and then to a GP
visit. Diarrhoea for more than 3days has risks such as dehydration which can make other matters worse.

I found Erythromycin to be quite a nasty one where the runs were concerned. The antibiotics not only kill off the bad bacteria causing the infection, but also kill off the good bacteria in the body. It's worth mentioning your symptoms to the Dr, but it's also worth getting some good bacteria into your gut via some probiotics like Acidophilus capsules.

Some people don't tolerate metformin very well and it can cause stomach problems, diarrhoea etc. I would certainly go see you doc and talk it through. Good luck !

Thank you to all who replied. I am now on the road to recovery, thank goodness :)
I was told that I had a bug, but it did last two weeks. I was able to eat without any diarrhoea as I was worried that not eating would make my blood sugar very low. Have since had a blood test and blood sugars excellent at 45, think that's 6.3. I don't think I will take a chance with this particular antibiotic again. With regard to replacing good bacteria, I'm taking Yakult light and hope it does the trick.
My diabetic nurse was really good at reassuring me that there was nothing serious going on.
