Hey all,
New to this forum and this is my very first post. I'm a type one diabetic and have been for almost 11 years and I have hit a wall.. More like ran into it! I am just burnt out and tired. So that is one reason why I am here. I am trying to get myself out of this slump as its starting to affect my A1C. I'm looking for a good book to help with this so any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you and cheers!

Hi @Scolleen and welcome to the forums.

How does your burnout manifest itself in your daily life? Have you stopped checking your glucose levels? Stopped injecting? Stopped eating 'good' foods?

Hi @Scolleen
welcome to the forum :)

It is hard to see the wood for the trees when in a burnout phase- we've all been there.
My suggestion is to try and be kind to yourself , and give yourself a lot of encouragement for the things that you get right.

there is a great bunch of people here and we will be there for you

also - do have a chat with your DSN ( diabetic nurse )

Hiya @Scolleen sorry to hear your struggling. Well done on joining the forum and looking for help - that's really positive.

You asked for book recommendations - I have a book called "diabetes burnout: what to do when you can't take it anymore" by William polonsky. I confess I've not actually read it yet (I was buying some other diabetic books and Amazon suggested it and I thought it was probably not a bad idea to have it around just in case, I have never been accused of being an optimist) it looks really good, pragmatic, realistic.

Let's be honest, it's bloomin hard being a type 1 diabetic, it consumes so much of our lives, every thing we do has an effect, whether it's exercise, socialising, eating, sleeping, even being ill, type 1 diabetes doesn't give us a day off . No wonder we can feel like this at times, on top of family, work and life we have so much more than other people to think about - so it's ok to feel like this, it really is, when you get like this, just be kind to yourself, it's normal and it's natural to feel 'burnt out' . Just try and focus on each day, do what you need to do to keep stablised, so test, inject just try and keep on track as much as you can, take some time out for yourself so exercise or go for some walks, it will get better ;)

Burn out can affect all types, when I get an off day its time for a bit of me pampering, long soak in the bath with some nice smelly stuff listening to some me music, when dry plaster on some moisturiser, slip into jammies and relax with a nice cuppa or a glass of wine if so inclined, I don't drink so its a cuppa for me.......heaven.....think about tomorrow tomorrow............

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am still taking my insulin and checking my BG. I think I just need to make better choices about food aka stay away from the sweets at work and hit the gym, and that will for sure help with my numbers and A1C. I am not out of control by any means just hit a wall and trying to get re motivated. Again thank you all for the kind words and advice. It really does help :) cheers!

Hi,

I agree with @satindoll
"Burnout" can affect all types. But also in different ways?
Personally. I focus on my D. But I also work full time & also play in 3 bands.. Now, I can't say no to the work. The bands do bring in money too. But ocaisinaly I feel I just can't be "*****" with the music. I have to fight it sometimes.. Lucky the genre is aggressive, but still.....?!
I love the music & wish I could "make it" full time. However 2 gigs got cancelled this weekend... I should be heartbroken.? But the burnout side of me lets it go..
D burnout can manifest in different ways.. Lol, I'm not even enjoying the "down time".

As a bloke. I got my Jap import van washed. & sorted out a couple of "niggles" on said vehicle...

... I'm with you on the glassowine now though!

Even eating a low carb diet, exercising hard 3 times a week, walking the dog twice a day... and keeping my A1C in good place still requires energy in the form of thought and action. It is the constant, unrelenting nature of the illness that bites so deeply. I was burned out, from work, the illness, etc. and had to go on sick leave (2 months) During that time, I decided to think outside of the box and try something new. I opened up to the idea of Mindfulness. Bit by bit, there was something to it that I could use and help re-shape my focus to the here and now and be in the moment with a more relaxed feeling about myself and my condition. A book to start with or audio book... is Full Catastrophe Living, Jon Kabat-Zin. Good Luck and let me know how you get on...
