My husband has just recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes he is 47.
He went to the doctors having been ill for a few weeks his levels were 27 plus after 6 weeks his readings are now 6.6 7's and 8's he is on 18 units of insulin which he injects before bed and takes 4 units every meal time to help with carbs. The last couple of weeks he has been acting like he is drunk after he finishes work he isn't because we work together so I'm thinking its his levels and they are too low but when we do the reading before tea its fine he then sleeps at 7pm wakes at 10pm takes his insulin then goes to bed until the morning. He has done really well to get his levels down i think he needs to eat more carbs he is a big guy and now has 3 small meals a day and has fatigue what should we do to get him feeling healthy its so upsetting seeing him in this state slurring his words no energy feeling tiered at about 5/6pm every night. Feeling worried - Sorry long boring text appreciate comments and experiences thanks

Does he test his blood sugar when he is acting like he is drunk? There's not a lot of point testing before tea a 7pm and expecting that to tell you anything about what his blood sugars were at 5pm when he finished work. I hope he doesn't drive home after work?

No he tests himself at 6pm every night and we eat at 6.30pm. we work from home however he does sometimes work away when he acts like he is drunk youcant get much out of him he doesn't make any sense then he goes to sleep

when he starts acting this way you need to make him test his sugars, everything you have said so far indicates a Hypo. iv had instances where iv woken up with a hypo but not understood whats happening then after awhile iv just fallen asleep again. woke up a few hours later and sugars are normal

Agree with the comments above, acting 'drunk' is typical of having a hypo. Its important to both test and treat it as quickly as possible.
It also sounds like he needs to increase his intake of food, why has he changed his diet ? Eating 3 small meals a day isn't going to sustain him if he's a large chap so increasing food intake is also important for sustaining his energy levels, just ensure he's carb counting correctly and recording insulin doses too, early on in diagnosis is important for analysing every detail as his insulin needs could change and his team need to be aware to make accurate dose adjustments if required.

Don't be worried about testing more often than just meal / bed times. If I'm feeling "off" I test just to see what is going on. Then if I'm running low I can eat.

Thank you for all your reply’s really helped and made sense since then he’s been eating more carbs and his readings are sitting at 7 & 8. We are at the diabetics clinic for appointment tomorrow so hopefully be advised on dosage of insulin.

That really sounds like he could be having a hypo and then going so low that he falls asleep/goes unconscious. In any case, whatever it is, please talk to your clinic about it.
Make sure you understand how to treat hypos (hopefully your clinic has already explained but I know there's so much to take in when you're first diagnosed).
Good luck for your appointment.
