Diabetic Craft Club

So many lovely things you've all made posted in this thread!

I used to do a few crafty things but working a lot of hours at a stressful job took it over and I hadn't made anything for years.

Recently I've gone back to knitting and crochet though and I'm teaching myself to knit lace from charts. Next project will be having a go at fair isle knitting, I did one small amount of greek key pattern on a cardi when I was at school and that's a lot of years ago so I think it's about time I had another go. I'm going to try a simple tam pattern, it's on double pointed needles which I haven't tried either so wish me luck :)

I'm finding my return to knitting etc. helps my stress levels, I've made a scarf, a shawl (both lace), two sweaters and a crochet table centre since I was diagnosed at the end of May. Now I just have to get my head round 'blocking' things, it used to be all you did was press things under a damp cloth :O

Sounds interesting. I'm not interested in plain knitting but the lace sounds great.

I have been in Yorkshire with my sister this weekend. She has a craft business making lovely eco-dyed silk scarves and we have been selling at a craft fair. She had a good day!

I think blocking bid only really needed for our wool and possibly cotton yarns. It's something I've never done and I'm sure it couldn't have made the finished garments look ant better...
If you find the double ended needles tricky, try circular needles. You can get some with interchangeable needle ends these days. Glad you've gotten back into your crafts .... with the fairisle it's getting the tension of the carried yarn right...most important that it's not too tight. Mum used to "catch it in" but I never got the hang of that.

Glad it was a good day. That's the thing if you are a prolific knitter...what to do if family & friends have enough and buyers often don't want to pay what the yarn is worth much less including some recompense for the time spent knitting...

Yes, I love circulars, I even knit 'flat' knitting on them often as they're easier to carry about but both the hat and the circular lace shawl I have a fancy to make have too few stitches at either the beginning or the end.
I thought I'd make my first fair isle project a hat because I expect tension issues at first especially with the double ended needles.

I stopped using straight needles for 29 years. Haha. They're really heavy. I probably used them for a few months when I started.

I don't find them heavy....I do find that when using circulars the garment weighs more heavily because front and back are all in one

You don't have to knit in circular just because you are using circular needles. Can still knit flats just like when u r using straight needles.

Great idea for a thread! I've not done anything crafty for a while, keep meaning to get back into it. I've done some low level jewellery making (want to advance my skills a bit), I've got candle making supplies sitting by to give that a go, and I've got a notion to make a patchwork quilt (having never attempted a project that big before - probably a bit ambitious).

Would love a pointer towards your already published books @RosieLKH
Love purple and love your pony!!

With the craft idea in mind, perhaps you ( @tinyfilosofer ) can bottle your anti-ageing rememdy:happy:. I'm sure between us all we can come up with some creative packaging suggestions (I'll play with the marketing strategy:cool: with your face all over the place:joyful: - sorry if you're shy but you do seem the best advert) and with the profits:greedy: we can all book a conference somewhere exotic to plan how we take over the world....... :wacky::shifty::mad::lurking::sour::D:D:DOoooo, sorry, did I get a bit carried away there?

Busy making a necklace tonight. Last weekend I was in Yorkshire helping my sister selling at a craft fair. We were approached by a lady from the RSPCA asking if we were interested in buying beads as they had been given the contents of a shop which had gone into liquidation. Monday found us in their stockrooms, going through 2 rooms worth of beads which the liquidators had deemed unsaleable. We bought about 1/1000 of the stock for a £50 donation ( a very good deal!) at which point they realised what they had been given. Anyway, the first beads were used today to make a winter colours kumihimo necklace which I am really pleased with.

How happens when we get asked for scientific proof linking knitting to youth? Knit a gag to shut them up?
