I am diabetic, not in denial, I live in Canada and one of my childhood friends, who lives in Scotland, has a sister in diabetic denial. Is there any areas in this forum that I could use to help her. Or at least get some good information to her. My friend is very frustrated by her sisters attitude.

you can try suggesting she reads the forum and signs in to post.

But unfortunately, when someone is in denial, they have some pretty impressive avoidance tactics and self justifications.
It can be heartbreaking to watch (my father is a case in point), but as friends and family members we cannot control them, and sometimes even the loving care and suggestions that we offer are seen as controlling and smothering.

All I can say is try, but don't be surprised if your good intentions are rejected.

I remember going through denial, but I believe it formed part of what some may call grieving, so anger, sadness too....

didn't last long though.....is this the same denial you think she is experiencing? Is she recently diagnosed...?

Thank you. Bruneian, I was hoping that either emailing me or joining this forum would help her. My friend and her had a bet, friend would quit smoking and in return the sister was to work on her diabetes. Friend quit smoking, but sister would not work on diabetes. I kinda think it will be a wasted effort but I know you can live with diabetes. I know she has to want to make lifestyle changes or it will not work. Plus the people here are very friendly and willing to help, a good place to be. Thank you again.

I knew for years I might likely end up Diabetic but tried to ignore it even though my mum has it, my cousin is pre diabetic, grandad was type 2 and I had PCOS and a that ghastly hideous apple shape all my adult life so I was not at all surprised to be diagnosed but for ages munched on the cakes and spuds and thought nah it'll be ok whilst meanwhile getting ill.

Hello,

how old is she, if you don mind me asking, I am a type one and have been for 11 years, know my mum went through hell with me as a teenager and I have struggled up to my twenties with denial, its only now i am seeing that i need to accept it! It takes time, also I think the fact I was diagnosed at 13 wasn't great haha i was such a terrible teenager with it all !

Just message if you if want to ask anything at all, ill be more than happy to share my experiences if it will help xxx

Sorry for not responding sooner. The person in denial is in her fifties. So technically should know better but she choose to ignore, what I feel is the obvious. I am sorry to say this but I think she needs a scare, but I would not wish that on her.

I agree with you, you do have to except your challenges and move forward. I know I did lots of Internet searching when I was diagnosed. I just wanted to know what I needed to do to keep on top of diabetes.

I think that is the same denial that she is going through and was diagnosed over five years ago. Her sister did a deal with her, if she quit smoking, then diabetic sister was to stop eating sweets and get her diabetes under control. The concerned sister quit smoking, which I am very proud of her for doing, diabetic sister did not hold up her end of the deal.

Hi Chaobaby7;

You certainly look like you were destined to be diabetic and I am sorry for you about that. I hope you got yourself under control now and can pass on those sugar spiking edibles. Hey a treat every once in a while, can be rewarding.

Sometimes I wish I was "normal" and did not have too do all the things a insulin dependant diabetic has to do, but for me it is a challenge and I like to meet and beet challenges

cornton.
