My doctor thinks I may have diabetic neuropathy. For months my untreated pre diabetes has apparently caused pain in my back and now numbness in my hands. Has anyone else had experience of this ? Thanks, Nick.

Yes. I had a number of "diabetic symptoms" while not being officially diabetic. List is on my blog. Thing is, there's nothing magic about having an HbA1c reading of 49: it's just the level the medics agreed on. Doesn't mean that you won't have symptoms, caused by your blood sugar levels, at levels below 49. In fact 49 was chosen specifically because retinopathy is rare, but not unknown, at lower levels.

What reduced or removed these symptoms? Getting my BG back into normal range through a low carb diet, around 20 g carb/day, unlimited meat, dairy and fat. This has gone along with a big improvement in my overall health and considerable weight loss.

Yes, but a knee injury complicates the picture; maybe both crush injury trauma AND neuropathy. I think one of my prescribed drugz started around the same time was not carefully read by one of my drs. for adverse effect-- neuropathy not recommended for diabetics, but that was only approx. 6 months ago. I take acentominophen and will see physiotherapists soon.

I was told I had mild, sensory-motor, peripheral, neuropathy of an axonal type. This was afew years ago, now I am told , by letter from friendly concerned efficient GP that I am borderline diabetic. I am a Parkinsons patient and I know that since that diagnosis I have been guilty of comfort eating, but how to undo all of that......

Ditto. I’m having investigation at the mo. It’s a huge worry.
I can’t get my diet right either.
Been pre diabetic for 6 years and it’s been and is a struggle.
Find some meals you know what what the carbs etc are and slowly build up your own recipe book of simple quick meals and snacks.
It’s driving me nuts. Not bad enough for metformin, but the minute I stray my BS go nuts.
Stay with it you’ll have bad days. I think most do.
