Hi i am 17 years old and have been diabetic for 9 years now. I have recently started noticing that my feets get really cold and they have this slight vibration in them. Tehy dont have a loss of sensation or anything like that. I am really scared of neuropathy and would wanna know if its possible to reverse if i have caused some damage over the years. My glucose has been high over the years and just know i have started to strictly monitor it. I have read lot about Dr Richard. K Bernsteins work and he has apparently managed to reverse neuropathy in his patients and himself. I am just 17 and really scared for my future. Have any of you managed to reverse neuropathy with tight glucose control and diets?

Hi Josh999 and welcome to these forums.

I'm T2 so not sure how much my experience will mean for you. However - I had quite bad neuropathy with relatively high (for me) BG levels. I was able to get back to normal BG, and almost all the neuropathy went with it.

That said, I do have a persistent mild tingle which is probably permanent, and probably a legacy of ten years undiagnosed. But it's really not pain.

Thank you for your reply. I dont have pain in them either just this vibration feeling. I am just scared that jt is gonna progress into a pain and worse… i have heard that a person with normal glucose levels can have nerve heal of a 1mm a day or about 2.5cm a month. If i manage to keep my glucose at normal levels i hope i am able to reverse the damage i have caused.

I had quite intense pain - stabbing, burning, that sort of thing, for about five or six years - I'd recommend avoiding that if possible. I guess the good news is that keeping BGs under control gets rid of almost all of it -at least it did for me.

Good luck. These forums are a tremendous resource.

Well done, for starting to keep your blood glucose within a healthier range. It is not easy but, as Dr Bernstein points out, it will result in a healthier body for the rest of your life. You will be in control of your carbohydrate intake.

Perhaps mention the vibration and cold feet to your GP, and to your Diabetes Team. A physiotherapist may have some exercises that will increase circulation.

I believe that the slight vibration may be to do with diabetes. Before my Type 1 diagnosis (as an adult) I had the feeling of vibration in my feet and legs, as well as a feeling of the room spinning when I went to bed. Both symptoms disappeared when my diabetes became well controlled.

Having cold feet is horrible. If you haven't already, ask your parents to get you sheepskin innersoles for your shoes and sheepskin boots/slippers to wear in the house. I am talking about short UGG boots-style that young people wear. Wearing Merino-wool socks will keep your feet warmer than man-made fibre ones.

I have great respect for Dr Bernstein's work. I trust him utterly when he said that neuropathy symptoms were reversed when people reduced their HbA1C.

Good luck.
