I also had mine pierced around 1970, similar to @SaskiaKC where the sleeper went in the ear with the gun.. We weren't given studs in those days. We had sleepers - very small rings, always gold, and had to leave them in for a certain number of weeks before changing them for something else. I had mine done at a specialist ear piercing place. I think they also did tatoos but I can't remember. I do remember we had to keep turning the sleeper to keep the hole open prperly. I ended up getting my hair stuck in it and needed help to unstick it.
As for dogs licking. I believe their saliva has anti biotic properties, hence they can clean their own cuts and injuries, but the hygiene side of things depends on the sort of other things the dog likes to lick or eat!
