Diet only
Went for a doctor's appointment a few weeks back with tingling feet and had a blood test done. Reading was 84 which the doctor explained was evidence of diabetes. My cholesterol was also high. She wanted to put me on medication but I refused as I had an inkling that I was at least pre-diabetic, and had read Michael Mosley's books on controlling same with diet.

Needless to say that blood reading was a real kick up the backside for me and I have been eating a very low carb diet for the last two weeks or so. Also exercising every day as my work consists of a lot of sitting at my computer which is not good. Anyway, I've got my weight down from 184 lbs to 176 lbs and this morning's fast reading was 6.1 [the lowest it's ever been]. Went up to 7.3 before I ate at midday [skipped breakfast] and two hours later was still 7.3.

Long way to go but I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you all for your posts which I've been reading constantly since my diagnosis - you really are a helpful and inspiring bunch.

You have made a good start. You might want to test how your BG levels do if you eat earlier.
I get the least variation by eating early and late, with a breakfast with just a few carbs - no carbs at all doesn't work as then I get lows in the mid to late afternoon. I had to work out the best option using my meter.

Thanks mate. I don't tend to eat early as I find I can manage very nicely just eating twice a day. Around eleven in the morning and then a main meal at 5 ish. That way I'm getting in a daily 18 hour fasting period which I think is working well for me. I certainly feel better than I have in years but must admit to missing a pint of good ale.

I need to avoid fasting, I eat as soon as I get up and then about 11 hours later. My meter shows that is a good thing for me - but we have to adapt as the meter tells us what makes up high or keeps us low.

Hi and welcome,

The morning rise with no breakfast will be a liver dump. When we wake up our hormones trigger the liver to dump glucose from its stores to help us get going for the day. In non-diabetic people this still happens, but the pancreas secretes insulin which clears the glucose to the cells for energy and at the same time tells the liver to stop dumping. This system breaks down in Type 2 diabetics because we have insulin resistance. The liver dumps. the pancreas secretes insulin, but the insulin is prevented from doing its job, hence our blood sugar levels will keep rising during the morning until such time as enough insulin has been secreted. This can take hours. One way to stop this is to have something fatty as soon as you get up and before doing anything else. A coffee with cream is ideal, or a chunk of cheese. You don't need to eat breakfast, and even if/when you do, there should be very few carbs in it, if any. If your levels are up due to dumped glucose, any carbs will only make this worse.

Well done on your excellent pro-active start to this journey. :)

Thanks for that detailed explanation on the liver dump. When I first did my own readings my fasting figure was well into the double figures for the first few days. Steadily coming down daily, and the 6.1 I had this morning is my lowest yet so I'll continiue with what I'm doing as it seems to be working for me so far.

But .... you could prevent that rise throughout the morning up till lunch time by having the fat as soon as you get up. That might mean you stay at 6 all morning. It is worth a try.

Hi and welcome, best wishes for continued success you seem to be to a flying start

Sorry if I did not explain why I eat early - I did not want to go into the actual numbers I get now - after over a year of experiment and refining I have become quite good at this controlling lark, and of course it might not work for everyone, but the regime seems to be working very well. Having a long fast might work for some, but I saw increase like you, and the eating early stopped it.

@midastouch . Welcome to the forum.
I'm slightly confused. Your avatar states ...insulin dependent type 2 diabetic. Yet your initial post says you refused medication.
For clarity and appropriate advice going forward is the avatar correct?

Magic start, great BGs and I agree with @Bluetit1802 about avoiding the dawn dump. Coffee with cream seems to do the tricks for me. Downwards and onwards:happy:

Maybe. Definitely as quoted on my screen, just thought I'd ask/ check . Save any confusion for OP going forward.
Technology :):):):)

@midastouch welcome to the forum. You’ve clearly read a lot about how to get control of your diabetes and making a brilliant start to lowering your sugars. I’m sure you’ve also come across the dietdoctor.com website ? If not it’s well worth a look for someone who wants to read around the subject some great videos on there too about the science of keto and low carb etc as well as ideas on different things to eat.
Wishing you well but it sounds like you’re the sort of person who’s determined and motivated enough to get there and turn things around.

Are you on the main forum site or an app?

It makes no difference, app/website/chrome/other browsers/cookies etc etc. Nothing works. I don't see any insulin dependent T2s even when they are insulin dependent. Others see it even when they are not insulin dependent. It is about time this glitch was sorted. It has been going on for at least 12 months, and this is the second confusion over it this afternoon.
