Diagnosed 4 days ago-typ2- feel Im going to die:( Help

Have a look at this and tell me you have been given a Death sentence, http://www.diabetes.co.uk/celebrities/index.html have you seen any of them not living a full and happy life, But you do need to be a little more careful with life style and food you eat, but honestly I am finding that this is not a bad thing, but rather an eye opener for me, sort of a kick in the bum to living a more healthy life. I went for a lovely meal last night, had steak with lovely salad fresh berry's with full fat cream on for afters and two large glasses of red wine, don't know if the wine is on my diet but reading on forum it is not detrimental to condition if drunk in moderation!! that's a first for me drinking in moderation, I was always like a buffalo at a water hole in Pub, But I really enjoyed myself. Think Positive things Daisy and don't dwell to long on the negatives.

Hello Daisy, I was diagnosed 12 weeks ago. It does get easier as time goes on. There is a great crowd of people on here and they are all very helpful, I've found.

To begin with, I followed the advice to reduce my carbs and keep a food diary, then added more and more info as time went on. It can be a bit overwhelming to try to grasp it all at one.

And keep asking questions. There is always someone who know the answer, or here to find the answer

Hi Bio:)
I don't know why they didnt put me on any medication, this worries me what will happen If my blood sugar rises over 14? I am waiting for Hba1c test results, and will see d nurse in 2 weeeks time cos she's on holiday grrrr what will happen to me till then?I am scared to even try to eat something high carb. I hardly eat anything. But after reading posts here I am trying high protein and fat diet, but still not sure abot fats, am I allowed to use olive oil in cooking? I had some grilled pork and salmon this afternoon and I am feeling great, my testing strips are finished, cause it was only 17 with glucometer I purchased, but bought some off Ebay :) will have to wait at list till Monday and then I will seriously start testing what I can and cant eat.

Hi Daisy

Yes you can have olive oil, I use garlic infused olive oil adsense extra flavour. As long you you do low carbs I am sure you levels will go down. Don't be scared to eat high carbs, just don't that way you don't have to worry.

welcome Daisy :D
Your BGL figures were pretty close to what mine were when I was diagnosed at the age of 25. I've had the condition since 1998. Don't worry... you soon get your head around things and learn to live with it. One thing you learn quick is that everyone is different and also that you have to keep trying different things at times to manage your condition. The best thing to make sure of is that you have a supportive medical team behind you. Don't be afraid to ask questions that need to be asked especially if you notice things aren't working for you.

Hi Daisy,

Just wanted to say welcome to the forum! I have been diagnosed nearly 2 months and the people on this wonderful forum have been here for me from day 1...It does take a while to get your head around things, I am getting there though...feeling better each day. You will be fine Daisy, I have 3 wonderful kids to live for and I intend to be around for a long time yet.

Warm regards

Sandra

Welcome! Before diagnosis I was drifting a bit being lazy and just content with what I had. Since diagnosis I have lost over 4 stone love the compliments I get and also seeing a lot more of a girl I love (we're just friends but it's complicated) I would never of lost the weight and consquently seen so much of this girl if it wasn't for diagnosis so diabetes has improved my life as it was the kick I needed. Trust me there's no need for any negative thoughts I've done a lot with diabetes I never done without it!

The diet advice from xyzzy is pretty much what I've done since I was diagnosed in Nov ish. It really works and its interesting to see that's what they give in other countries. Smile at the NHS and push them for all the tests and gadgets you can get, but otherwise ignore their diet imo. They say eat wholemeal bread, usually I run at like 7 after a meal, the one time I had two slices of wholemeal toast is thr only time I got a 10! Like you I felt panicked. I don't ever want to be above 8 personally. I completely understand your reaction I felt much the same. But honestly if you follow these fairly simpme rules you'll stay within it.

One word of warning, like you I started to panic and to eat even less then I normally do, (i can tend to anorexia type behaviour). It seemed like food was the enemy and would kill me. Then I got a 9 on my meter, amd I hadn't eaten since lunch which was 7 hours before. Turns out if you leave too long between eating that (counterintuitively) will throw up your blood sugar levels too. So don't not eat ok mate. It's actually the thing I find hardest of all. Routine is king, if I'm not going to make dinner I need to have a small snack like some olives or a small piece of cheese.

Excercise is brilliant I personally find body pump and I am now doing body jam which is brutal! They knock about 2 points off my blood sugar so I find I need to actually have a cereal bar before if its first thing in the morning or I run out of puff and wind up sweating and weak. But after I often get a 4 or 4.5 on my meter so I've even had a sneaky doughnut at such times lol which avoids me getting cravings for naughty cakes :-) Also if I'm habit a big meal which is full of good things I find if I want to have a sticky desert then is the time. It seems that te overall sugar content of the meal is what counts so I have been known to have some right sticky deserts, I just have maybe a half, then give the rest to a friend. Diabetes has made me popular!

This is why you need the meter, ignore what they say, you need to know what works for YOU. I only tested at first to work out what foods make my sugar go up a lot (test before and two hours after a meal). This doesn't mean I never eat this stuff. It means I know I can't compound these foods one on another. So I can have the odd pain au chocolate, but not that THEN a sandwich on bread THEN a cake. It's like a mental sugar and carb tally your brain keeps, and after a while it becomes second nature. Only other time I test is if I feel weird. So j feel I have trained myself to know if ta going up, or if its low, and at these times I test to see if I'm right. So now I am rarely surprised what the meter says.

I personally looked up what 'normal' levels are, and I figure if I stay close to that I have no reason to live less time then anyone else. My friend just got diahnsed with breast cancer and it makes me realise this isn't the best genetic hand to be dealt but its also not the worst. Since being diagnosed I have felt so much clearer mentally, more energy, I have been in a fog for many years and not known. It will take a few weks to get the nack old these tips but honestly you're clearly a driven person, I think in a. ery short time indeed you will feel great and won't know yourself. This is a great place for advice I would hve been lat without it, in fact I know where I'd be I'd be not eating much at all and with blood sugar levels round my ears. So keep asking stuff they really will help you, you'll be fine honestly :-) xx

Hi Suzie and Gappy, thanks for kind words:)
Suzie thanks for clearing some things for me. I was wondering if I ever be able to eat chocolate or cake.
So from what you saying it is still possible, so if i have to have something high carb, it is better to excercise right after?
I will have to test, my strips should be with me in few days, then I will start testing.
I was wondering since I am not on any meds what shold I do if my meter will show over 10 should I go for a run or something?
Also I was wondering if somehow by diet and exercise I will lower my BS to nearly normal level will I still get a huge spike after eating something high carb?
It all scares me to death...worst of all I don't want my girls to get it. I measred my older girl's sugar once after dinner and it was 7.2, wgile my yonger's was only 5.6. Should I be worried?

Daisy, I always do some exercise 45 minutes to one hour after eating to knock my levels down. I do however find that hard cardiac work which raises my heart rate to above 155 actually puts my sugar levels up. It's all a question of balance and finding what works for you.

My weight is down, but if I eat something really carby my levels will go up, but not as much as they did before. I had a little cake the other week and could feel my levels rising, so I'll not be doing that again.

Hello everyone, I have some good news:) Thanks to your advice about low carb diet I think I am doing pretty well.
I was diagnosed last Monday, and since then I eat diet full of protein and fat and non starchy veg. Remember I was out of testing strips, but they arrived this afternoon, I checked my Bs it was 2 hours after I had some baked pork ham with salad made of fresh leaves, cucumber, tomato and carrotino oil,it was 5.4mmol- unbelivable, cause I was so down and upset when I was first diagnosed, and thought nothing will help me especially that I didn't get any meds to help with diabetes. Also I got my HB1ac results, from day of diagnosis it was 6.7% , so what it means? either I got diabetes recently, in recent weeks or my diet wasn't that bad before??
Anyway thanks everyone for helping . My future now doesn't look that bad :D

Well done Daisy

An hBA1c is a measure of how much glucose you've had in your blood over the past 3 months so won't have been much changed by anything diet wise you've done in the last couple of weeks. At 6.7% you're just into the Diabetic range which starts at 6.5%. That's very good news as if you work hard, loose any weight you need to and keep your levels under 8 two hours after eating then you have a good chance of MAYBE recovering some carb munching capability. Of course if you do that and then munch away at rubbish and put the weight back on you'll be back to square one. The honest answer is the best way of looking at it is keeping your weight down and adopting a low carb lifestyle will as my doctor said to me "put your db in remission". There are no guarantees in all of this though. As for how low carb you need to go well that's determined by what your meter tells you is safe.

So given that your ARE diabetic at 6.7% then I would say your diet before was bad, maybe not horrendously bad but obviously bad enough to give you T2D. You are getting readings like 5.4 because you ARE low carbing. All my readings are normally between 4 and about 5.8 because of eating low carb. You could prove this to yourself by say eating a plate of rice or pasta but I wouldn't recommend it.

As for chocolate and cake. Chocolate, as long as its the high 80% or better stuff, is generally ok and a bit now and then will do you no harm. Cake is a bit more problematic because of the flour but it depends on the ingredients. Look on the low carb recipe thread for some brilliant low carb cake recipes.

So now you know you're not going to die so look forward to your new healthy life!
