Diagnosed type 1 couple of weeks ago

Hi guys, so I was diagnosed a couple of weeks back as type two, then after more tests and finger prick tests, changed to type one as of last week. I have had very little information from the doctors as of yet, they keep on telling me to wait and check back... my questions are as such... is the keto diet best for type 1 or just type 2? And also, can I take Grenade fat loss tablets as a diabetic or is this not advised? Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Since your diagnosis has just been changed were you also changed to using insulin? If not, I'd want to know why not and you really need to get their attention about this - waiting may not be an option dependent on various factors.
If you are now on insulin and on fixed doses then I wouldn't change to keto/low carb until you know how to change your doses for however many carbs your eating otherwise you may well hypo.

Some T1's do do low-carb/keto to help with their control, many don't, depends entirely on you I'm afraid - everybody is very different to each other

Hello and welcome @JJ1994 :)

Have you been put onto insulin yet ? How are you feeling in general ?

You will have tons of questions, absolutely normal to feel like you need answers, if you're on insulin then you need to follow the guidance of your team in regards to diet, as it will depend on what insulin regime you are following, if on a bolus/basal routine then you can eat keto and adjust your insulin, if on fixed doses then not without input from your diabetes team.

In regards to fat loss tablets, I have no idea sorry !

That's the thing, they started me on insulin and metformin straight away and have just been increasing the insulin dosages steadily, which has helped a little. I've tried calling and asking for advice so many times but to no avail.

Hi @JJ1994

What insulin are you taking and when ?

I think diabetes care has been difficult for all recently as many nurses have been seconded into other roles but help from your team will come right again and hopefully soon.

Hi. You mention fat loss tablets? Do you have some excess weight? If so just be careful with the amount of carbs you have and test enough times to check that your insulin shots are matched to your carb intake

Hi JuicyJ thanks for getting back to me, I am on 20 units of lantus in the evening at the moment, but they have said that they will be going to put me on a different one before every meal. Apparently.

Hi, it's all very new, so I'm not 100% on anything else, theres been no advice at all, only even diet or things like that. The last few days I've been on super low carbs and have noticed the sugars have almost normalised (6.8 to 9.4) but am trying to shift the excess weight at the moment, so I ordered the tablets to help me, then 2 days later I got my diagnosis, I only ask because on the box it says not to use of on any other medication type.

Hi. Yes, personally I would leave those fat loss tablets and rely on the low-carb diet and the insulin. You may find as the weight goes down that you don't need so much insulin so do test often enough to know where you are. When you have excess weight you can become insulin resistant due to fat deposits. As that fades your own insulin and any extra you take can work more efficiently.

Right okay, so it should start to better regulate once the weight is down and out so to speak. That makes sense I guess.. and it is going down, I'm down from 22 stone 2 years back to 15 now.. still a ways to go but much better than it was, thank you for your help
