Diagnosed Type 2

Hi all,

Got diagnosed early April after initially going to hospital for UTI after unable to get doc's appointment.

Big change in what I can eat, but not too bothered about that but will miss out on a lot of my favourites (including the wife's homemade jams)

If it weren't for an OOH Doctor who immediately mentioned that I needed diabetes tests as all the symptoms I had mentioned to my own doctor and hospital and initial tests taken they never mentioned it.

Shocked at how much meds have to take :( taken more in the last few weeks that taken in the last decade.

Are there any decent apps on android that looks at the food you eat as a diabetic and keeps a record of it and can be linked into either Samsung Health (main), Google Fit or FitBit - I currently use Lifesum but want something better and have used MyFitnessPal in past but both these are not geared towards UK products and also have incorrect values.

Hello and welcome
You have found a great resource here.
What meds have they given you and what is your hba1c?

You may have been given dietician advice that actually isn't that supportive of a dietary change that has been found to work well for T2 (low carb) plus self-funded testing of your blood levels are highly recommended. Browse the forums and ask questions as you need

As you are on meds, hopefully you've been told you get free prescriptions now. Low carb for many has reversed the need for meds, not all people but quite a few, so possibly an option to look into

I use carbcounter app, I don't sync or pay for the premium option but hopefully others can chime in with suggestions

At the moment

Folpik XL 10mg (felodipine) (daily)
SunVit-D3 20,000 IU (Cholecalciferol) (weekly)
Januvia 100mg (Sitagliptin) (daily)
Atorvastatin 20mg (daily)

I have to get more meds (Ramipril 2.5mg) to go with these - did start just on standard antibiotics

Hba1c? not sure but if this is sugar count I think they said it was about 88, I've got more tests in a couple of weeks.

Regarding the cert, yeh i got a load of meds the day before they gave me the results and said you now diabetic and gave me the form to fill in and send off (but said unsure if I would get a cert), which was easter. I spoke to my chemist and because i got some the day before they completed the exemption form ready for when I get the card through, just a lot of outlay to begin with :(

I did ask about the blood tests and they advised at the moment no need to do them yet, but i do have to do my blood pressure on regular basis as high.

Are you UK based?
That's a lot of pills for a newly diagnosed T2 (although the Vit D is probably a good thing..).
It's quite possible to control T2 and get blood sugars down by changing what you eat (plus lose a few extra pounds if you have some to go) without any medication as many of us will attest.
Did they give you any reason for the statins?

Hi and welcome. We would all advise that you get hold of glucose meter and test every so often typically 2 hours after a meal. You can't control what you don't measure. A couple of points. Statins are handed out like sweets by GPs and they tend to do it automatically with diabetes. Make sure at your next blood test probably in 3 months time that the test includes a full 'lipids profile' which shows your breakdown of fats. Many/Most GPs take the Total cholesterol as the measure which is not the best approach. You need to look at the various ratios e.g. LDL/HDL, Trigs etc and see if they are in a good range. You shouldn't need statins if the ratios are good. Note you may want to stop the statins for a few days before the blood test so it tests your natural and not your medicated lipids. Sitagliptin is a useful diabetes med but I'm surprised your weren't prescribed Metformin as well which is the most common med for T2. I'm afraid I can't help with the phone Apps.

@bulkbiker yes i'm in the UK, the Vit D they said was very low and thus given me those to take for 3 months on weekly basis and that my cholesterol was high.

i'll try to get more information on my next visit as with everything was going on all at once and quite overwhelming in to take in.

Try and get a printout of all your results if you can.. cholesterol can be fairly dynamic so dietary changes can have a bigger impact than drugs and will likely be more effective. Statins have also been known to increase blood sugar levels in some people so might not be great for us T2's..

@bulkbiker will ask when I'm there

@Andydragon do you know the exact name of the app so can look it up as Lifesum is constantly changing how much to eat each day (ie it will say 1000 cals for lunch, but if you enter 300 cals it says perfect and then changes the max to just over 300 for the meal and then add 1000+ cals for a snack.)

Oh yes got name wrong, the one I use is called carb manager, I don’t pay for the premium features and I do need to check the values but it allows scanning of foods from barcodes. Has searchable foods and allows tracking of foods. I use digital scales as well.

there are other apps of course it I like this one as I can set macros, track my weight etc. I do put my exercise in and with weight it guesses calories burnt. But I don’t treat this as a way to eat more, just a way of tracking inn one app. I don’t trust calorie deduction in this way

As it’s American based too it can be carbs aren’t quite as we track as in the uk fibre etc. Is removed so I keep an eye on net carbs
