Diastasis recti?

Hey all..

The mrs was talking to me while i was training yesterday and she noticed a bulge/ridge appear whilst i was doing sit ups (in the center of my stomach from an inch or two below my breast bone to an inch or two above my belly button). Its something i had never noticed but once she pointed it out to me it made my stomach turn (excuse the pun ). Its not visible when i stand or line down its only visible when working my abs. Ive googled this and it sounds like its 'Diastasis recti'.. (i did the test and i have roughly a 2 & 3/4 finger gap). The mrs has booked me in for my doc to get it confirmed but theres no appointments till late next week ... Suprise!!

Have any of u had it?

Ive watched some clips on youtube about healing/repairing it but thought id ask in here for advice (nothing like speaking to someone whos been through what ur going through)..

It's fairly common in pregnant women - which I appreciate you're not!

However, you may find some of the help sites and books and exercises aimed at them useful :)

Watch out for some of the exercises on Youtube. Some aren't recommended and might make it worse.

Oh. So that's what that is.
My youngest is 30 years old now, we were told not to worry about such things back then.
I don't think I'm going to want to be doing crunches and planks, but thank you very much for the information

I always knew exercise was dangerous ;)
tell me about it!.

"Stop drinking beers.. Stop the smoke.. Get healthy and train more!".. They said!.

..then boom!. U'll look like u have a alien growing in ya stomach with a hole in the centre to play with!.

I had diastasis recti after abdominal surgery some years ago. In my case it was cause by the surgeons separating the muscles (as opposed to cutting them) to gain to the offending body part.

Given time and swimming most days, it corrected itself.

My alien has left the building. :)

I think the appearance of this lump 2-3 inches below your sternum, when doing sit-ups may possibly be a ventral hernia, rather than diastasis recti. Just a thought.

@AndBreathe did the swimming work? I read not to swim?.

Im doing some lower ab work like it says to online and some pelvic floor exercises as they say that helps - nothing strenuous..

@Struma ill google the hernia

It worked fine for me. As my muscles had been physically stretched and held in that place for the duration of my surgery, they swimming was just gentle exercise to tone up the old six pack again. By swimming I mean more duration, breast stroke swimming, so good, supported exercise, not thrashing about. My OH referred to it as my "floating head phase" as it was so gentle, but I was swimming every day.

That said, to be fair, I wasn't allowed to swim until 4-weeks, post-op, so it had had a little time to begin to settle. During that 4 weeks, I was just walking gently, but not lifting,......... anything.

I've had no problems since, several years on.
