diet coke

Hi All

Just a quickie, iv'e been low carbing for a bit now and my sugar has been pretty well controlled. However I have been getting a spike to quite high levels now and again and I couldnt work out why. I looked at what I was eating and there was no common food, that was untill today when I was able to isolate the reason for the spike.

It would appear to be diet coke, I checked the ingredients and even though it says no carb or no sugar the sweetners when looked at are very concentrated.

I wonder if anyone else has come across this.

Fair to say diet coke is off the food list.

Tony,

I can't see it being the diet coke, I don't drink as much nowadays, but use to enjoy a glass or two without any effect on bg's.

Just goes to prove we are all different! :)

I agree with Nigel, I can't see the sweetener having any real effect. I drink loads of the stuff and it has no effect on me at all. I would think you need to look more closely at what you ate ?

Here is some information about sweeteners from a website:

There are five non-nutritive sweeteners which are permitted for use in the UK: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame K), cyclamate and sucralose. Only very small amounts are needed because they are so intensely sweet. They are virtually free of calories, do not affect blood glucose levels .

Intense sweeteners are used in a wide range of manufactured sugar-free, reduced sugar and low calorie foods and drinks and are also available as tablet, liquid and granulated sweeteners. They can be helpful for people who are trying to manage their weight to sweeten drinks or as a table sweetener on cereal for example. Sugar-free, diet or low calorie drinks tend to be sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners so make a good alternative to ordinary version.

I just don't go there anymore as the food acids are suspect for me. I have had to retrain my taste buds and initially made my own fizzed soda water with one of those soda machines and added a few slices of lemons or limes to give me something with interest. I think that hit of sweetness makes my brain think I am getting something that needs to be dealt with.
Sad that I have become, I really like my bedtime drink of water with 2 teaspoons of cider apple vinegar in it to (hopefully) lower my fasting BGLs and reduce the acidity my eyes as show in my irridology reading! Not saying that irridologists are great but mine did not 'see' diabetes in my eyes. Maybe with an HbA1c of 5.3 it doesn't indicate I am in a diabetic range or have been for over 12 months! I am still a diabetic though.

Does anyone know, does the caffeine in diet coke effect blood sugar levels? I've looked on the internet but get a lot of sites that say caffeine is poison, caffeine causes cancer, caffeine kills kittens, that sort of thing, so I have no idea where to get reliable information! I should probably drink less anyway, it's not good for teeth (acidic).

Here is just one link which says that it isn't good for you

There are many more. There are just as many saying the opposite. Personally speaking I drink buckets of strong coffee daily and it has no noticeable effect on MY Bg levels. I think everybody is different in their responses. I won't be giving up my daily fixes of good plain coffee any day soon. I also drink diet Coke as well, no problems.

Ken.

I too had found that Diet Coke caused BG rises for me so stopped drinking it. Read this thread with interest and tried the Zero product with a much better result.
Recently travelled in Queensland (Australia) in the sugar cane country so visited the Bundaberg Rum Distillery  They had a new product of their alcho-pops which was their rum and Zero and are promoting it as suitable for diabetics, drunk in moderation naturally.
Now if they can come up with the caffeine-free alternative that would be tops.
Caffeine does affect me as a diuretic and possibly raises my BGs. We now drink decaf tea and coffee most of the time.

Caffeine may have an effect on blood glucose levels in Type2 diabetes.

If you have type 2 diabetes and you're struggling to control your blood sugar levels, limiting the amount of caffeine in your diet may provide a benefit.

Interesting link Sue, I drink instant espresso every morning which I imagine has pretty high levels of caffeine but after elevenses :) I drink tea and my bg levels are definitely better towards late afternoon and evening. I have always thought that was just the way my body worked but I may try dropping the coffee for a week or so and see if it makes a difference.

I may struggle in the morning without my usual two or three mugs of caffeine though

Sid.
I read that link too and as I am not struggling to control my Bg levels maybe that's the reason why Caffeine seems to have no effect on my levels ? Like you without a 'livener' first thing in the morning it takes me at least an hour to wake up ! No way am I cutting out either Coffee or Diet drinks.......

There are just some pleasures in life that I have to have...... :D

As you can see from my user name I love my coca cola  I changed to caffeine free coca cola more than 10 years ago. I can't say I think it affects my BG levels.
Coke Zero has a different sweetener to Diet Coke. It was originally designed to appeal to the male population. Zero is made to the traditional coke recipe and tastes more like regular coke, but without the sugar. I have not tried it myself. But my OH says you soon get used to the taste.

Real Coke tastes foul to me now. I got so used to drinking Diet Coke and the likes... The new "Zero" drinks are awesome, though. They don't taste like they are "diet" drinks, but they also don't taste/feel syrupy in your mouth.

Win/win! And GREAT for mixing with booze. JD & Coke Zero is a winner!!!! :D

I ain't no diet drink expert or nuttin' - but I do enjoy the odd Fanta Zero (Orange). :P
