Thank you both - its lovely to have someone to share worries with. 
The meter is reading correctly - I checked it against a friend's and there was only 0.1 between her's and mine. (That was a bit of an eye opener.... she regularly get up to 15 and didn't understand why I was worried by a lowly 11.... )
I had really bad neck pain this morning - which I get quite a bit if I sleep very deeply - but it didn't go away after I got up and I took some Ibuprofen for it - that was after breakfast but before that first high reading. Maybe it was the arthritis or the Ibuprofen but I've had both before so I wouldn't think so.
Anyway, I haven't had anything to eat since breakfast but have drunk gallons of plain unflavoured water
and my latest test shows my BG as being down to 5.2.
So its a bit of a mystery really.
Thank you for suggesting its not enough to start worrying now - I know you're right - I really hope it doesn't turn in to a pattern.
