Dietary advice and more

Today
Weetabix
Cheese, cucumber, apple
Mackerel, leeks, courgettes, broccoli
Greek Yoghurt with blueberries
Almonds

That is my first day of trying to eat what I should, is that right? Before my diet was full of carbs and sugar
Sounds pretty good to me,, apart from the weetabix and perhaps the apple :)
Did you eat enough to fill you? Going hungry doesn't help with dieting.

Yep as the others have said try without the weetabix (especially in the morning when you could be more susceptible to carbs spiking your already elevated blood glucose due to dawn phenomenon) and apple.
Doesn't sound like you are eating a lot..so maybe up the portion sizes.. Bump up with creamy coffee and more meat perhaps?

Hi @Sarahswim, firstly sorry you have joined this not so exclusive club, but congratulations on seeking advice from here. The truth is your body will not be able to eat the accepted so called norm. I can promise that for savoury type foods there are so many combinations, it is impossible when educated to get bored. The difficulty to replace (if you need to) is sweet stuffs. Again whereas bananas and milk chocolate and similar should be side stepped, I have almond / coconut pancakes (lately with mixed in peanut butter), yesterday low carb blueberries muffins, berries with Greek yogurt, cheese cake, cheeses.

If possible can you upload a picture of the suggested meals you were told to eat.

Hi
I was given the 2 page food fact sheet for type 2 from the association of UK dietitians. I cant upload it, not very tech savvy
It generic so tells me reduce portion size, eat a balanced diet and use the eatwell plate, which contradicts what I think I should be doing.
When I woke up this morning my reading was 15.4
Breakfast scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and spinach and coffee
Tested 2hrs later and I am 16.0

Is that ok?

15.4 > 16 after 2 hours is ace. That breakfast really suits you.

If you keep eating like that your numbers should drift gently downwards to more normal levels. :D

Hi. You will find the various associations for dietitians generally haven't a clue about diet so best ignored. I know this sounds amazing but sadly true. Follow the diet advice on this website and other sources posters give you.

I'm afraid I agree that the advice from the association of diabetics is actually not helpful for a diabetic. This for me is why testing is essential. As @Brunneria said the small rise shows that meal suited your body.

For me testing provides you with the information and evidence of what suits your body. Most diabetics find that carbs do not really suit them. Dramatically reducing my carb intake brought my HbA1c into normal levels.

Good luck- stick around and ask questions and you will find your levels drifting lower. The fasting one is often the last to come down.

Welcome.

I will say about dietitians it is the luck of the draw ....... When I was first diagnosed I dealt with one who was completely worthless. The only thing she told told me don't eat this don't eat that and did not give me any solutions. I was then fortunate to work with a dietitian who explained carbs and balance and it made world of difference !!!!! She gave me tools so that I could figure things out. It felt like she was a partner in the process and even gave some sound advice on how to cheat !!!! I would not think of doing any cheating until you have good control.

After reading several entries in this forum they are giving pretty good advice on carbs. The only thing that I would add is that it would be a good idea to keep a journal of your daily blood sugar numbers so you can see trends. The only other thing I would add it to take it a day at a time. You are under a large learning curve and it takes time to learn things. You will make some mistakes, which is alright, just learn from them. My blood sugars initially all over the place, but was able to figure things out.

This has been said before, but please get a meter ........

Bust of luck

Dave

Download the mysugr app and record your food and numbers. I found it hight motivating when I first started. After a few days it will give you an estimated hba1c based on the data you enter. Obviously this won't be accurate until you have entered a few weeks worth. There is a free version.

I did the same thing with a spread sheet, I did not pass it out since it is based on mg/dl
