Type 2 Different Carbs different BG spikes

When I eat rice, pasta or bread (inrrespectiveof whether it is whole meal or not) my bg spikes quite dramatically and I have to use more insulin. However potatoes and sweet potatoes do not have this effect. How do I know which carbs are okay-ish or is it just a matter of trial and error?
 
For me few carbs are okayish, but I do suspect that we react differently to different foods - peas and beans cause spikes higher than the carb composition should, when compared with the same number from other foods - though grains and potatoes are not something I can eat at all.

Just keep testing. Start with small amounts and see what happens.

I can eat some homemade, organic stoneground wholemeal flour if I make my own bread the slow way.

Other carbs are not my friend.
 
This different effect of the same carbs on different people is the reason why it is so important for even Type 2s who are on no , or just oral, meds to have a BG meter and to test, test, test until they at least know what they can and what they can't eat without consequences!

I myself am still trying to figure out carbs. So far I have learned that I and my body hates them :)
I personally have come to conclusion that for me there are no "good" carbs. I think what tripped be up is I think I ate "good" slow carbs and then 4 ish hours later ate faster carbs and the cumulative carb spike caused problem.

Great question! Everyone is unique and you are doing the perfect thing of testing foods for YOU - and then planning/eating according to the results.

I have to give a plug here for an amazing book I am reading right now: Your Diabetes Questions Answered, by Jenny Ruhl. Love love love this lady's practical advice (after testing her blood sugar for 20 years!). That book is a total gem and I highly recommend it.

As previous people have said- we are all different in what we can tolerate so regular testing is very important. I think even with those that don't spike you now testing from Tim e to time is probably a good idea.

I haven't really tested many carbs yet but even if I find ones I can tolerate I plan to be very cautious so I don't get lulled into a false sense of complacency.

if you can tolerate some- great! but keep testing from time to time.
