Hi everyone,

I had a telephone appointment booked with a consultant which I waited 2 hours for which I did not recieve until I was on my way to a local supermarket and whilst crossing a very busy main road with multiple traffic lights so the doctor finally rung me, it was not safe for me to take my eyes off the road so I missed 2 calls one after the other, again 2 hours after the appointment time!

A few weeks later, I recieved a discharge letter which confirmed I had been discharged from the diabetic clinic and was signed by a locum consultant endocrinologist. I decided to show this letter to the DSN this morning because I was quite concerned about it. The DSN has confirmed that people with Type 1 diabetes are never fully discharged from their service and that a discharge is against the rules because the service could be needed for SOS, emergencies, such as DKA etc.

The DSN has also advised me that when my consultant finds out about he' going to be furious.

There is a good chance that diabetic clinics in other areas may also do the same and not fully discharge patients with T1D from their service and I have posted this message in the hope that if this happens to anyone else with T1D your clinic should be able to reverse it.

Your life in their hands!

Thanks for the heads up.
As Ron White would say ... you can educate dumb a** but you can't fix stupid ... ring 2 hours late then try to discharge a T1D :banghead: impressive

All my phone appointments come with a warning. There will be 2 attempted calls and if no response, I will be discharged. I am sure if you phone and explain, it should be sorted out.

If you are speaking of your diabetic consultant that may be so but if you are refering to MG and neurologist that will never happen I actually missed a face to face appointment with my neurologist last week he called me on the phone to make sure I was ok then made me another appointment I have been told that they would never discharge a patient due to missed appointment where life threatening conditions are involved.

I have all sorts of appointments, cardio, vascular, neuro etc. They all come through a portal, all with the same warning.

You are fortunate. My experience is different. Two misses and I am discharged. It's at the bottom of all my letters for various appointments with specialists for myself and my family.

At a previous clinic (pre-pandemic) it used to say on appointment letters if you missed an appointment you'd be discharged. I'm not sure what the rules are at the clinic I'm at now but they do say they aim to phone within 2 hours of your appointment time.
At my dermatology clinic they wouldn't tell you they were phoning and would try once, from a withheld number, in the week before your appointment, then would write and say that they hadn't been able to get in touch with you. Thankfully no discharge though.

I agree. 3 years ago I had an appointment at fracture clinic as I had broken my wrist (falling on some ice) We had alot of snow that morning and I phoned to cancel as I wasn't sure I would be able to do the 20 mile round trip and return safely home again. I had already cancelled the automatic appointment they had sent me as I had a more urgent appointment booked for my aunt at another hospital 30 miles away that day. I was told to definitely not come for the appointment on that snowy day as they didn't want people with broken limbs out in the snow, and that they would send me another automated one and if I couldn't attend that then I would be taken off the list! :banghead:

Obviously with a broken wrist I needed someone else to drive me, so I was very lucky hubby could get the day off when the rescheduled appointment finally arrived. Why they couldn't just arrange a date with me when I cancelled I don't know, but hey any excuse to blame the patient for not turning up.
