Diverticulosis

I suffered intermittently from irritable bowel syndrome for much of my life, especially when sitting exams and under stress, but in 2003 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and adopted a low carb way of eating soon afterwards. To my surprise, the IBS disappeared completely, never to return.

A daily serving of above ground, leafy, green vegetables cooked any way you like them and raw in salads provides plenty of fibre. Ground flax seeds are widely available from supermarkets and health food shops if you need a little extra fibre without raising BG readings and avocados, if you happen to like them, are a tasty way to keep eveything moving.

Hello, I’ve not been on this site for a very long time , as doctor seems no longer worried about this , I do have regular blood test but nothing else .
I’ve a couple of questions , I have diverticulitis ( had a very bad fair up recently) which made me start to think about it all again , I have noted the magnesium citrate and will certainly try that , as the constipation is so painful.
When I was on here before there was a very helpful moderator who made her own granola the night before , I’m wondering if she is still on here or if someone has her recipe, big ask.
Reasons for my being on here for so long cancers have sort of taken over my worries , I’m 86 if that makes any difference.
Thanks for help once again

Sorry to hear about your ill health regarding cancer @Thornliebank.

I too have diverticula disease and although I’ve had it diagnosed 17 years (same time as my T2) I’ve had very few diverticulitis episodes on keto, but had a really bad one about 3 years back & had to do a no fibre, bland BRAT diet for about 3 months which raised my HbA1c from 46 to 55. Once I was over it got back to my usual keto and no problems since

I can’t think of retired or current moderator who made their own granola - I’ve made this one now & then but not for a while
Marks & Spencer do a no grain granola which I’ve had & I know some of our members have tried

I’m wondering if your thinking of homemade “porridge” for the recipe as I know member & retired mod @Rachox makes a porridge type dish for breakfast

Thanks for the tag @lovinglife I have made keto coconut porridge and chocolate granola. @Thornliebank here’s the link for the porridge:

I can’t remember which recipe for granola I used but Googling low carb granola brings up loads of recipes.

thanks Rachox ,
I do recognise your photo , so think it was you .
I used to follow the keto diet I think I should get back on it , I’ve even got the book so no excuses.
Thank you to lovinlng life , this was the first very bad turn I’d had for ages , maybe I’m blaming the wrong thing.
To be frank and probably to much info I swing from constipation to the other way , in fact the constipation is easier to control.
Thank to all will look into it probably later ,

I’ve suffered from painful infected flareups requiring hospitalisation for decades. However since going low carb those have almost disappeared. However constipation has increased despite lots of fluids and green veg.
Too much fibre causes flareups, too little increases constipation. I never seemed to strike the right balance.
Psyllium husks are helping… but build up very gradually. Tip of teaspoonful mixed in glass of water to start with then immediately drink the same amount of water again. Very gradually increase the amount on the teaspoon stirring briskly into the water and drinking down followed by another glass of water. Think recommend amount is 1-2 tsps but everyone is different. I’m managing with 1 tsp.
It’s the only fibre addition that hasn’t caused its own problems.
My diverticulitis comes from I think my gall bladder removal and the constant drip of bile thereafter inflaming my gut together lots of antibiotics and generally poor gut biome.
I’m trying to tackle that too with probiotics.

Thanks Taighnamona , I can relate to everything you’ve said , my diverticulitis was diagnosed when I had bowel cancer.
I’ve been very lax with diet lately due to more cancers .
But I’m going to get back on the keto diet this week end , I seem to have lost all interest in food , which was such a big part of my enjoyment but will try and get back to it little plates are what I now enjoy.
Hope you get on ok ,
