Do I need a bedtime snack?

Hi guyz, if I have a BG reading at 6.2 at midnight should I eat a Snack or keep going on a empty stomach until 6am?
I would say it depends on previous readings at the same time. If you are going on just one reading, the reality could be something else. If in doubt take two readings, one after the other. Yes less than 6.5 is chancing it!

Hi and welcome!

It might help people to answer if you let us know how you usually eat, and what meds you are on, if any. Also maybe what type of Diabetes you have? All those things can affect the answer... :)

I must take that "chance" every night then

I've always liked living on the edge................
Me too then - my late evening levels are always my lowest and will usually be under 6 even if I have eaten supper, which I generally do as otherwise i get hungry overnight and then don't sleep.

For me that fatty supper helps keep my morning level lower too.

But @Ivy8208 we do need you to provide some answers to Brunneria's questions in order to give informed opinions...

My qualifier is that I am type 2 and not taking meds that cause hypos. I went to bed last night at 4.8 and woke up this morning at 5.9. Brunneria has hit the nail on the head. It totally depends on what type of diabetes and what meds you may or may not be taking.

I normally have two rich tea biscuits and a cup of tea though I drink coffee throughout the day.. My night time bg usually varies between low fives to mid sixes and over the last fortnight my fbg has only been above 4.9 once I think.

So I think having a snack in my case is probably wise. If you are worried about hypos then it may be best to have a snack if it fits in with your meds and as I am not on the same meds as you I am unsure if that is the case.

If the gliclazide constantly gives hypos then it should be considered by your nurse/dr to be reduced. Maybe you're low carbing so your excellent diet is reducing your need for excessive meds? Keep a good diary of bgs for your nurse, incase of amendment.
Snacks are encouraged in none insulin producers. (Type 1 and type 2s who aren't making their own insulin).
I use a snack even thou I do produce my own insulin as I am severely insulin resistant and can have very high liver dumps. My evening supper/snack is to block my liver dump. This snack prevents glucose being released from the liver, muscles and other organs in times of fasting. (Through the night). Fasting during the day can cause a liver dump too. I take insulin for severe insulin resistance. Everyone is different. Try introducing a small snack e.g a few almonds or few cubes of cheese and see how your hypos bode?
Gliclazide can cause hypos.
