My friends know, and people who I used to work with knew, just in case they had problems with me testing (some might have had a needle fear). If some one sees me checking I don't mind explaining what I am doing and why I am doing it.

I certainly don't say "Hello, my name's Fred; I'm diabetic" (especially as my name isn't Fred :-)), but I'm happy to say I'm diabetic when it comes up in conversation. It's useful when food crops up: I'd hate to be thought of as a faddy eater, and it requires an explanation when faced with a sandwich lunch, when I fish out the contents and throw away the bread! I hate to be so wasteful, but it can be that or starve at business working lunches.

. . . .well I don't keep it a secret when pressed or in conversation but it's amazing how many of my family/friends etc say to me, "What, you're diabetic?" . . . .so shows what a strong impression I've left lol.

I have no choice, ive lost so much weight, its the first thing i talk about when someone hasnt seen me for a while, shop assistants tend ask me if im on a weird diet when i get to till with strange stuff, trouble is they have oppinions on dieting and i never met anyone who understood low carb dieting in the real world so i end up nodding and trying to get away. :)

Yes all the time, whether or not the question is brought up. I need people to understand when i refuse offers of some foods and drinks, and they can only understand if they know the real me.

Family knew from the start of diagnosis (October 2012 with Type 1). Managers and certain colleagues at work know because I was hospitalised with DKA coma at the time of diagnosis and off work for four weeks. I am 57 and don't have a problem telling people socially or at work, but it's now on a 'need to know' basis. Working in an office means lots of cakes and biscuits, so it's better to have an explanation rather simply refusing to eat them (I don't like cakes and not keen on biscuits!).

Going on a group holiday soon. The organisers know about the diabeties for insurance purposes, and I guess the other participants will find out when I start testing and injecting at meals. But I wouldn't go out of my way to tell them first.

When I've told colleagues and friends, they tell me that they have friends or relatives with late (adult) onset of Type 1, so that's been helpful. On the whole, I've found it better to tell people.

I have been using a dating site since Xmas after splitting from my ex 3 yrs ago !! One guy I was talking to on line and told him I was diabetic been chatting for 4 weeks so no big deal !! Thing is he sent me a message he didnot want to catch it and bring I was a junkie he had no interest I should just drop dead and save the world from parts like me !!!i was so insulted !! I now have DIABETIC on my profile so rveryone sees it if they wish to chat with me !!!!!

I voted sometimes. It depends on the occasion and whether I can be bothered to get a word in edgeways with some people  But I did in Asda's last week, because a customer was telling the checkout lady that her granddaughter had just been diagnosed with Type 1 and she was concerned, worried and bewildered by it all, its not surprising though, very scary  and I just came out with," excuse me,I'm also Type "1 etc etc..........
