Does anyone understand the nitty-gritty of looping?

@EllieM ,
can you see what insulin the pump has added, and use that to update the basal profile that it will use the next day?
Is the algorithm aggressive enough to temporarily double or triple the basal rate?
My pump shows insulin on board at any time, which is based on insulin injected on top of the background insulin, which then decays away over 5 hours. (This isn't necessarily accurate, because if it's been giving me extra basal then it'll include that as IOB even though it isn't really an excess over what I need as basal). But it's better than nothing.

All pumps are different. Mine isn't that aggressive so if I needed to triple the basal rate I'd have to do it manually. In practice I can view what the pump has been doing over the last few days and then use that to manually alter my basal profile to whatever I want. It gives me a lot of (manual) control but I sometimes suspect that I'd get better control if I had a pump that learnt from me. On the other hand it's great when I have changing insulin needs because of changed activity/circumstances. And my pump algorithm totally fails to appreciate that I am a lot more insulin resistant if my bg goes over 10 so I usually manually correct then, which is easy to do on this pump.

My hypos have gone down dramatically since going onto a pump, which is the reason the hospital put me on it. It's not perfect, but for me it's a lot better than MDI.
