I was diagnosed in September 2015 and am diet only. Well, I had a blood test earlier in the week. I saw my Dr this afternoon for the results. My HbA1c was 44 when diagnosed and it's now lowered to 42. I know 44 isn't bad but it was my fasting BSG results that put me in the diabetic range.

I've changed my eating habits a lot. I now eat much more veg and foods that aren't processed so no ready or quick meals, pizza, cake, biscuits, white bread etc. I also attended an XPERT course at the beginning of the year which was fantastic and my hubby and I both learnt so much.

My blood pressure (which I do take medication for) is also now in the acceptable and required range for a diabetic. So, unless I have any problems or my blood pressure rises drastically I don't need to be seen until I reach my annual review in Sept/Oct time.

So pleased and proud of myself for sticking with my "diet" and resisting temptation, especially at work where there is often a cake fest most weeks!

Can you please talk about the Xpert course you attended. Thank you

In what way was it helpful specifically? What advice were you given?

The XPERT course is a 6 week course. It was run by a Dietician and DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse). Each week covered specific topics. In the first week we learnt how diabetes affects the body and how energy is converted. We also learnt about sources of carbohydrates and insulin resistance.

It covered so much: good and bad fats, how to read and analyse food labels to make better and informed choices, comparing supermarket foods. One thing that stood out for me was the week where I learnt about the shocking about of carbs in McVities digestives. They changed one of their ingredients to Palm oil mid way through a year. The result was that the number of carbs in a single biscuit rocketed!

We also learnt about portion sizes and how many portions of each food group we should be aiming for. It covered complications and how to prevent them.

The handbook we were given can be ordered on their website. I think it's around £7 or £8.

I'd thoroughly recommend the course if it's delivered in your area.
