hi

my name is tara im 32 and had my youngest child 8 months ago

i have been experiencing lots of symtoms been tested for usual blood tests and all normal apart from serum organic phospahte being below normal.

my symtoms are: fatigue, always tired. always dry mouth and thirsty, weight gain and can not lose even an ounze, bloating and swelling of tummy after eating meals, headaches, nighttime sweet craving its getting worse as i actually wake up in middle of the night wanting sugar. I have constant mood swings i get jittery when i miss a meal and latley been getting odd chest/rib pains that extend down my left arm, cold hands/feet constantly, odd aches and pains randomly in my muscles in legs.

I have had scans, blood tests and nothing shows.

i have not been offered any diabetes tests.

i have contacted a private clinic who looked at my symtoms and straight away said insulin resistant test and hormaone profile but its sooooo expensive. but i feel my dr is not listening, i break down and they seem to dismiss and just treat the symtoms.

ive been told that the isulin resistance test can only be done privatley, but im sure you can imagine i just dont have trust in anyone.

please help, any info or direction would be so much appreciated.

love tara :(

Hi. A few thoughts. Although you have had blood tests it may be worth getting hold of a blood glucose meter to re-assure yourself that your sugars are normal or to highlight any problem. You can buy the SD Codefree meter and test strips from Amazon etc or buy one of the popular brands from your local chemist (cost a bit more). Test 2 hours after a typical meal to find out what your blood sugar is and how much food affects you. Anything below 8.5'ish is OK; preferably a bit lower. If your blood sugars are fairly normal then it's unlikely you are insulin resistant to any degree otherwise your insulin wouldn't be holding your blood sugar down. If your blood sugar is into double figures then you must reduce your carb intake and make it low-GI to bring the levels down. If they remain high then you need to see the doc again for diabetes tests of which the Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) is good and also the HBa1C test which shows the average over the last 3 months. The latter test is usually only done after diagnosis. I wouldn't at this stage pay for private tests for diabetes as the meter should provide good guidance initially. I'm in the process of having a c-peptide test done privately for insulin levels and it's not cheap but the only reason I'm doing it is to try to sort out my actual diabetes diagnosis not to confirm diabetes. I guess your GP needs to comment on the low phosphate level which would not normally be related to diabetes. Some of your symptoms could relate to diabetes but others probably wouldn't

A few years ago (before being diagnosed diabetic) I had problems getting my health problems addressed by my doctors practice, and got very frustrated and depressed at them not looking at all of my symptoms together.

I was given some advice by a work colleague to write down all my symptoms as I saw them and return to see my doctor with my list.
Suddenly I was not dismissed as before, they addressed every issue and found many connections between my symptoms, and I got the correct treatment and have not had any issues since.

Because doctors are busy with lots of patients to attend to, they may have selective hearing.
You could try the written list, they can't dismiss what is written down.

From my own experience with chronic fatigue symptoms, I'd suggest having your Vitamin D3 levels checked. Low Vitamin D can make a huge difference to energy levels and mood.

I'd also suggest getting Vitamin B12 and folate checked, because if you're having digestive issues, malabsorption of vitamins can be a problem.

The bloating and swelling after meals also makes me wonder about wheat/gluten intolerance as those are very common symptoms. One easy test you could do for yourself would be to eliminate all wheat (very hard to do as almost all packaged foods contains it) from your diet for a month and see if it makes any difference to your symptoms.

Mazbee's suggestion about writing down all your symptoms to show to your doctor is an excellent one as well.

Best wishes,

Sounds like an endocrine system problem of some kind. ME type symptoms and food or environmental intolerances. The last post put their finger on it I think, wheat intolerance obvious possibility.
Anaemic by any chance? Could be coeliac.
The trouble is most doctors simply will not be bothered with the symptoms of intolerance, they are too variable and amorphous, and not amenable to treatment, and could be caused by stress too.
You need to check your blood glucose levels as suggested, and if they are normal you perhaps should do a bit of research on exclusion diets.

I had similar problems.. Before I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes I was very unwell for two years the doctors didn't help me at all I kept complaining about my symptoms of tiredness, dramatic weight loss, constant thirst, urinating constantly, headaches and many other things. The doctors diagnosed me with anemia!!! This went on for two years! Until this year I was in the middle of a car accident.. A van drove into the back of me while I was sat in traffic and I got pushed into another car.. I got rushed to hospital and the hospital asked if I was diabetic I said no as I wasn't diagnosed with it and the hospital kicked things off for me.. Within two hours of me being discharged from hospital I had a diabetic nurse ring me and she saw me at home and put me on a course of insulin a day later.

Ever since then I have been on insulin but it's been a struggle with the doctors but i would advise that you keep pushing at them and take it to different doctors even specialists, also take matters into your own hand and do what diabell has posted, get your self a blood glucose meter and keep records of your blood sugar levels and take that with you to your doctor, also try and see a different doctor maybe??

I hope you get sorted soon

Best wishes

Kerry xx
