Ive been diabetic many years now and dont know who I need to see or speak to, to get some kind of help. For the past few years I've been having trouble with food. I cant eat sweet stuff ok but when it comes to savoury its very poor. It seems to be getting much worse the older I'm getting. I really have no appetite where savoury food is concerned. I work 3/4 days of 12 and 1/2 hour shifts in my local hospital. I also work night shifts too. My appetitie for savoury food has decreased since working at the hospital. I barely eat a cooked savoury meal once a week. I dont enjoy the taste. I've seen my Dr who has just referred me to a dietician, I'm really not sure they will be of any help. I've seen a psychologist before and they didnt seem to think I had any issues. I really dont know who can help. My only food enjoyment is sweet stuff mainly cake and chocolate. Any ideas please??

This sounds like hard work I feel for you but can't imagine what it's like as I love all foods !!
Without meaning to sound rude, are you trying different savoury foods or just the same old things you used to enjoy? I'm not sure what advice to offer but maybe find a savoury food you like and can eat and then work from there to the next food they don't even have to be foods that go together and it might look awful but you'll be eating and that's the important part good luck I hope you enjoy dinner today

You could eat high cocoa content dark chocolate, and cakes, biscuits and desserts made with sweeteners instead of sugar. Have a look on the food and nutrition for recipes.

Here's a couple of ideas....if you can afford them.

Maybe a naturopath could help you? Mine has given me a mixture of 5 things to sprinkle over all my food so that all the taste buds work at every meal. Too soon to tell you if it's helping though.

Or good quality counselling? I had many food issues myself when I was a child and some still remain, but at least I know why now so I accept there are some things I can't eat but also some that I could try.

It's very difficult!! I like just plain food nothing spicy or lot of herbs added to it. It's not just the food I can't stand the smells so I'll cook something and can't eat it because the smell makes me feel ill. I cooked a roast on Sunday and enjoyed that but I can't eat that everyday! I'm like it with drinks also, I love tea but can only tolerate a few cups. I'm sick of coffee. I'll drink no added sugar squash, I don't like plain water. I don't know how a counsellor could help because I don't actually know what the problem is or why I'm feeling like this.!!

@Sarah69 I do believe you have made a boo boo in the fact you say you can't eat a roast dinner everyday??? Why ever not I roast something pretty much ever day wether it's meat or vegetables sometimes just the wire racks in there because I'm so excited about what I'm going to be eating I forgot to turn the oven off one of my favourite things to eat is vegetable kebabs red onion peppers mushrooms tomatoes courgette just grilled they are yum you can even add chicken with a nice yogurt and herb or spice marinade?!?
There is no criticism in this comment the first part was a little jokey I'm sure it's hellish for you at times, wish I could help more !! Keep your chin up and cook another roast dinner

I don't know how long you have been taking Metformin but you are taking quite a high dose 3000mg a day. I was taking 2000mg a day of the slow release one and it almost completely took away my appetite and foods I used to love just did not taste the same any more. I couldn't eat any meat especially the chicken that I mostly eat asI don't like red meat so I was only eating fish but really tiny meals. Other foods I would have normally liked tasted awful but I never had a craving for sweet stuff. I was loosing weight I did not need to as I have always been slim. My doctor told me to reduce the dose of Metformin each week until I felt my normal appetite was returning it took until I was down to 500mg a day once a day and about 3weeks before I could say I was beginning to feel hungry and enjoying food again

Current opinion is that there is no general therapeutic benefit in having more than 2g of Metformin per day and it is just likely to accentuate any side effects. Unless you are on such a high dose for a specific reason I'd review it with your doctor - it may help your appetite.

Sarah - When you say you can't eat a roast every day; is that because you don't want to, can't afford it or another reason?

I think I weigh about 14st 10. I couldn't eat a roast everyday because I would get bored of that and would soon make me feel ill. Also not practical when I'm at work as I don't get home from work til about 8.15pm and can't eat that late. Food is a nightmare for me most of the time. I don't actually take 3000mg metformin because I forget to take it lunchtime. I really don't know what to do or eat apart from chocolate.

Metformin can alter taste - it says so on the packet - I can't drink real coffee any more as it tastes really strong and very bitter. I thought it was possible the statins, which turned be senile, but it hasn't gone away now I have stopped them.
I now drink decaffeinated coffee very weak, but it still tastes odd.
