Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this so I went for general chat, I would just like to mention this book I have bought from amazon after reading a post that recommended it, I think it was Sam that said about it sorry I can't remember for sure, I have started reading this but haven't by any means finished it, but this book is simply brilliant, unless I'm the only diabetic on the forum that hasn't read it, please look into buying it if you can its a wealth of information I can't put it down.

One of the first books I bought when first diagnosed, echo your review.

I have an older edition. Bought in the USA in about 2003. It's my diabetes "Bible"
It is the most comprehensive book on the subject I've seen. Dr. Bernstein knows his subject. If I could afford the trip I'd be ofrf to see him myself. You can join in his webcsaasts however, Just go to his website and find the link. You have to do the world clock thing to "listen in" . My smartphone has that app.

Ps converting units is a doddle. All you need is your x 9 and x 2 multiplication tables; or a calculator :(

I read it when I was first diagnosed and thought it was an interesting read but unlike most of the comments so far I quickly realised that I could NEVER live on the diet he describes, I mean I use portion control but only a cup full of salad!! Never going to happen I'm afraid  Also his list of off the menu foods is long and IMHO obsessive. I found that there were much better books that taught me much more and in a more sensible manner.

An interesting read but definitely not a book to live your life by unless you want to live like a hermit. I would think that very few people could keep to his suggested diet without cheating and if you need to cheat then the diet is not fit for purpose in the first place is it?

Any highly restrictive diet that requires you to take mineral and vitamin supplements for the rest of your life is not for me, or most others I would think either.

Sid: I found that there were much better books that taught me much more and in a more sensible manner.

May I ask if you could say which books you would suggest reading please Sid?

Sorry messed up the quote thing :)

I agree with you, Andy and Sid.

For me diabetes management has to be something I can deal with not for weeks or months but for years to come, and I certainly could not stick to the diet Dr Bernstein recommends for the rest of my life.
I still think you can be diabetic and enjoy your food, it just takes more planning and innovation. :)

I found the book a bit hard to read. Dr. Bernstein has made a great contribution that helps many people with diabetes.
However self control, using a bg meter and a little exercise is the basis of the book.
There has got to be a more simple way to enjoy the way we eat and keep control.
I should talk as I am getting used to this vegan diet.(I borrowed a book by Dr. Neal Barnard,s which is a bit close to what I doing)
Roy. :)

I've never read the book TBH, having read this and other forum comments about his diet information and how tight he believes we should keep our bg control was enough for me to decide not to read it, I also read that he's not a fan of insulin pumps which I find somewhat baffling.

Yes I have read it. I don't find it all bad but certainly not enamoured with his dietary regime. I don't like his marketing nor his reliance on anecdote for what works.
You mentioned other books : I bought this book when I thought I was about to be diagnosed with T2.
I think it was an excellent book covering a lot of ground from diets (plural) to what the various blood tests tell you.
The First year Type 2 diabetes : a patient -expert guide fro the newly diagnosed Gretchen Becker (she's from the US but there is an English edition)
(and it helped me even though I wasn't type 2, just found the bookmark in it for C pep and anti Gad tests which prompted me to ask the doctors if I'd had those tests , that's 8 years ago now!)

Yes I have borrowed and read it, then soon came to the conclusion that to follow his suggestions I would be letting my diabetes rule (or rather ruin) what is left of my life.
I was diagnosed T2 some 13+yrs ago and always return good results from my various reviews, so as far as I am concerned, Dr Bernstein can manage without my contribution to his wealth.

I read it, but couldnt follow it. Too restrictive. Moderation is ok... I can luve with that.. BUT... 1 cup of salad ... Never...
