I posted this in the wrong forum before but...

My husband has cancer and I have to try to maker him eat more, we are going out tonight to his favourite Chinese Restaurant. Can anyone recommend a lowish carb dish I might have, my GS levels are not good I have trouble keeping them under 10.

It's difficult trying to balance putting weight on my husband and losing it myself:-(

I've found meals without sweet and sour sauce are ok. So maybe something like chicken and cashew nut with a side of chop suey mixed veg? I dont know how many carbs you're aiming for, but if you need to add extra carbs you can have a few spoonfuls of rice. Another one is Chinese chicken and Roast Pork with Beansprouts. Satay sauces can be problematic, depending on how sweet and thick they are, and some of the Hong Kong style sauces also seem sweetish. My Chinese also has something called Lemon Chicken which has very little sauce at all, but is tasty.

Most things are ok at my local Chinese, but I do find some of the sauces have more carbs in than I thought. So watch the sauce is my tip!

Thanks Azure,

I'm type two and on Metformin, Gliclazide and Sitagliptin, trying to stay off injectables, so the lower the carbs the better ( I think).

I'm also on several Asthma and chronic pain meds, so a bit of a mess all round!

Ok : ) So avoid rice and pancake rolls, and choose a plainish meat main course with some extra veg to fill you up. If you want a starter then you could try a clear soup like chicken and sweet corn or chicken and mushroom, but bear in mind even those often have some kind of thickener like cornflour in.

Some Chinese restaurants also do Chinese omelettes which would be good.

As for dessert, they're mainly sweet like banana fritters, but if you were desperate for one you could have ice cream with no sauce or syrup. Avoid the lychees - they're sweet too. Or what I sometimes do is just order a nice pot of Jasmine tea and sip that as my 'dessert'.

I hope both you and your husband enjoy your meal : )

Go to an Indian. Much more low carb choice, than a Chinese. Stay away from the rice and breads. And the desserts except the full fat yoghurt.

Enjoy!

I go for a Chinese meal regularly- it's the only place my son will eat and sometimes like you are doing now with your husband diabetes has to take a little step back.

I have quarter duck with lettuce to wrap rather than the pancakes and the tiniest drip of sauce, I then have special chow mein - I do okay on a few noodles and eat round them once I have had what I can deal with, a side of stir fried veg - make sure to ask them not to add any sugar or honey and that they don't use MSG - that's a devil for raising BS.

It's a nice thing your doing go out and enjoy your evening with your hubby, life isn't all about illness we have to look after our emotional well being as well

Thanks to everyone for the idea's it is certainly nice being able to go out and just have a good time;) . Oven ever really posted before just looked through others, but I think somehow I'll be posting more often in the future, already it feels like I'm talking to friends☺️

Something like Egg Fu Yung might be OK, with stir fry veggies? Maybe a Chinese chicken curry without rice, but a few bean sprouts or stir fry veggies as carriers?

Alternatively, see what your husband fancies and then see if little bits of his could make up a meal for you - if he's having some stir fry veg, or an chow mien. Not eating a whole portion might help, so if you can formulate a little sharing spread where he can choose what he would like to eat?

I'd be avoiding sweet and sour, anything in batter, rice (although, personally, I don't do too badly on rice) or glutenous sauces.

If it's a one-off, then don't be tooooo, hard on yourself. If you're looking for something to do regularly, for him, then a bit more thought perhaps. No matter how good or bad you are, it's worth being vigilant with testing. There might be some pleasant or less pleasant surprises there.

Have a lovely time.

A book I have on calories, carbs and fat recommends a Chinese curry as being the lowest with respect to carbs. Personally I have the Singapore chow mein and count it as a "off" meal. Red wine helps keep the rise in blood sugar low.

If you make your own, your curry can be very low carb. It's mostly about plate size!!!!!!!

Be careful with crispy seaweed, it has a lot of added sugar

Thanks everyone for all you help, we got caught in traffic and didn't have time to go to the Chinese before the concert we were going to., I'll keep your suggestions in mind for the next time. We ended up in Macdonalds I had one of their salads with no dressing, not great but..........

We had a fantastic time rolling back the years watching Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham (Scottish fiddle and accordion players) we go a long way back with them, cheered us both up tremendously

Bad luck about missing the Chinese, but that'll make another nice night out another time :)

Glad you enjoyed yourselves.

My gluten-free friend eats at McDonalds and just asks for a burger without the bun - think I will try that the next time I need to eat in there! Better than one of their salads that has been sitting around for ages!
