Eggs just caused a spike!

My fasting reading this morning was 5.7 so I was thrilled.

Decided to have two fried eggs for breakfast. Took a reading 2 hours later expecting it to be about the same or better. I was in absolute shock as it came back at 8.8.

I had been busy doing housework after breakfast but that wouldn't cause the spike (counting it as exercise but it certainly wasn't vigorous) would it?

I haven't had a reading that high since the beginning of March when I had a horrible cold and laryngitis.

Thanks in advance for your input.

My level just before the first bite was 5.7.
I did do a check with another test about ten minutes later and it was 8.6 so not too far off.

It'd be good to know what you were by 4 hours later before you blame the eggs given that all sorts of things could have spiked you e.g. emotional stress, budding infection or just lifting the hoover upstairs. It only matters if your bg remains chronically elevated.
Your fasting bg is excellent so you should be chuffed with that btw.

Weird, no carbs in the eggs, only explanation that seems possible is that the housework caused a liver dump.
And the +/-15% meter accuracy could go some way to explain it
When you apply the 15% your 5.7 gives you a range of 5 to 7, and the 8.8 is something like 7.5 to 10.5 for your true levels.

My light housework consisted of dusting and doing some dishes.
No stairs in my apartment and I didn't do any hoovering (vacuuming) this morning.
I had wondered about the meter inaccuracy so thank you for doing the math for me.

If the first was low & the second high they were not really that far apart. It's the main reason we allow a 2mmol rise after a meal, any two results within 2 mmol of each other can more or less be considered as being in the same range

I would see the same thing.
I have three eggs, some cheese and a large tomato for breakfast some mornings and that stops the rise. Without the small amount of carbs my BG just goes on rising. My other breakfasts are of similar composition.
I then do not eat until the evening, so I don't have to worry about food if I go out.

I’m like @Resurgam if I eat zero carbs like eggs and bacon I will get a rise - I have about 3g carbs - either tomato or berries. Usually though my breakfast is leftovers from the day before so always have up to 4 - 6g carbs depending what it is

Not saying this is the case here

A couple of times I've tested having a higher fasting one the min I got up,

I was curious if it was right and tested before and after drinking a glass of water

Not 100% on the conclusion but I think when I'm dry/dehydrated my levels can be a couple of mmol higher

I never considered that I would need to eat a small amount of carbs with my eggs to stop the rise. I could have had a few raspberries this morning. Good to know.

I have been doing very low carb since November and have seen weight loss and a lowering of my BS. I was diagnosed at 30 and was down to 18 when I saw the diabetic nurse. To see numbers ranging from 5.5 to 7.8 is very rewarding. Of course I don't know how much influence the drugs are and how much is down to diet. I'd like to get off the pills and use diet alone to control things.

I read this forum every day and have gotten both inspiration and great advice. I asked to have my B12 tested and the nurse said we don't normally test for that but since you asked we'll do it. I'm in Canada. Turns out my B12 was low!

Eggs actually do have a small amount of carbs, .6 grams per egg. Still likely not an amount to worry about. Everyone is different and you should experiment with yourself. Personally I can’t have any carbs. For breakfast it’s ground beef (mince?) and some butter, coffee with full fat cream. If I fast my numbers rise until I eat. I find it all fascinating!

Hi @W&D's Nana, please don't panic. Such a rise could be due to many things, Next time you have eggs for breakfast, make sure that you test just before and 2 hours later and see what you get. I would never trust or worry about a single occurrence of high BS.

I would be absolutely swinging from the rafters with joy if my BG was 8.8. Struggling to get insulin doses correct when you are on chemo drugs and your GP throws 2 more drugs at you that you find spike BG is certainly testing. Oh, and then allow for the carbs in each meal just to keep you on your toes. :) I regularly see 13, 14, & 15 at least once on a daily basis. Just when I think I've made the correct adjustments to keep below 10.0, another drug gets thrown into the mix.

Being a Libre 2 wearer, my BG readings scanned with my phone, are transmitted to my diabetes team. They are happy that my average is around 13 for the whole month. However, my BG for the last 30 days has been 10.9. I will take that. Happy days.
