Elevated liver function tests

I've recently had my third yearly diabetic review and was generally very pleased with the results as was my doctor. My Hba1c was 6.2 (down from 6.8 last time). There were just two things that the nurse said she was conerned about, one was my weight which had gone down by 10kg making my bmi 18.3, abit too low she said. The other thing worried me though she said my liver test came back at 40. I don't know what type of measurement that is but when I asked what a normal level was she said 17, so surely 40 is really bad as it is more than double that?? Then she said my previous ones had been 22 & 29 but no one said anything about them being high before. Can anyone tell me what this means? Should I be really worried and is there anything I can do to improve it? I'm type 2.
