Today I received the results of my first annual test for my type 2 diabetes. Diagnosed last March with a blood count of 8.3 and now 5.7 and three stone lighter. Doctor asked why I had stopped my statin. I explained that I had read it lowered good cholesterol as well as bad and it contributed to diabetes and I expressed other doubts. Surprisingly he agreed with me. He congratulated me on my progress. My check for my feet was fine as well as my eyesight ( fine for my age ) The nurse reckoned my sugar level was now lower than people without diabetes and she also congratulated me. My low carbohydrate - 100 grms and less - has worked. The nurse suggested I could go as high as 150 grms by adding potatoes back into my eating plan but I declined. Accepted with good grace. The practice seem to have a laid back approach to diabetes that possibly other practices don't. Enjoying my eating plan so the future looks good.:)

Well done, great to hear succeess stories. Keep up the good work; potatoes (chips or wedges) as an occasional treat would be great but sadly I am almost totally carb in intolerant.

Wonderful to hear that some practices are enlightened about eating habits, and congratulations for what you have managed. I agree with Arab Horse that a few small potatoes (my choice would be a couple of new ones with lashing of butter or as I had Sunday, a couple of small roast potatoes with dinner) wouldn't hurt, particularly if you are testing after eating. I do tend to eat to my meter rather than set portions sizes.

I think the potatoes would be the thin end of the wedge? Trying not to slip back into old habits. Just had some extra nuts.

Hi. You are lucky to have a good surgery team. The nurses' suggestion ref 150 gms may make some sense if your HBa1C is so low and your weight is OK and you actually want to eat more carbs. Sadly NHS staff are obliged to offer what NICE says ref statins etc and have to report statistics. They don't wlays agree with the advice. Many years ago my diabetes GP remarked, when NICE reduce the cholesterol level to 4, that soon we wouldn't have any fat left in our bodies.

Well done for such good results and lucky you having such a good surgery. I also eat to my meter and went without potato products for almost a year. A couple of weeks ago I succumbed to Jersey Royal potatoes, they did no damage at all, I have yet to try chips or wedges though but the thought hmmmm?:wacky: keep up the good work

Thanks for the positive feedback. I expected some resistance from the surgery to my eating plan which is similar to the LCHF or modified Atkins plan. When I told the nurse the carbs I was eating and not eating she emphasised that red meat should be eaten to balance the low carbs which means fat wasn't a concern.
